Chapter 5 - Coming Home

Ten days after the nightmarish ordeal in the delivery room, Maya was finally discharged from the hospital. The physical wounds from her C-section were slowly healing, though the dark purple bruise across her temple remained a painful visual reminder of her father's betrayal.

David drove them home in their newly purchased family van, outfitted with three state-of-the-art rear-facing car seats.

When they pulled into the driveway of their suburban home, Maya gasped softly. David had installed a brand-new, six-foot tall wrought-iron security gate around the perimeter of the property, complete with motion-activated floodlights, high-definition digital cameras, and a keyless smart entry system.

"David..." Maya said, looking around in awe. "You did all this while I was in the hospital?"

"Nobody is ever going to threaten our family again," David said, unbuckling his seatbelt and reaching over to softly touch her cheek. "This house is a fortress now."

Together, they carefully carried the three infant carriers through the front door. The nursery was warm, quiet, and filled with the gentle scent of baby lotion and clean cotton. Three white cribs stood side-by-side near the window, each painted with custom wooden nameplates: Ethan, Leo, and Charlotte.

The baby boy Richard had tried to steal was Ethan—named after David's late grandfather, a man known for his deep honor and protection of his family.

As Maya set Ethan down into his crib, the infant opened his tiny dark eyes, stretching his small hands into the air. Maya leaned down, burying her face into his soft chest, letting out a long, shuddering breath.

"You're home, baby," she whispered, her voice breaking. "You're safe. Mommy and Daddy are never letting anyone touch you again."

That evening, as the babies slept peacefully, David’s phone rang. It was an private investigator he had hired independently to dig into Richard’s business affairs.

"Mr. Vance," the investigator said over the speakerphone. "We found something huge. It turns out Richard didn't just try to steal your baby to clear his debts with Jessica's family. There's a second motive."

David frowned, looking over at Maya, who was sitting on the sofa folding baby clothes. "What motive?"

"Your late father-in-law's estate—Maya's paternal grandfather, Charles Vance—left a trust fund created thirty years ago," the investigator explained. "The terms of that trust state that the first male great-grandchild born into the Vance family line inherits sole title to a commercial land parcel in downtown Austin currently valued at twelve million dollars."

Maya dropped the baby blanket she was holding. Her jaw went slack.

"If Ethan was legally registered as Daniel's son," Maya whispered, realization crashing over her like a tidal wave, "the twelve-million-dollar trust would have automatically transferred to Daniel... and Richard would have had total administrative control over the cash payouts."
