Chapter 5 - Six Hours of Ice

At 6:00 AM on Friday, the surgical team arrived to transfer Lily to the operating suite.

I kissed her forehead, whispering in her ear, "Be brave, my sweet girl. Dr. Cole is taking care of you."

Lily gave me a sleepy smile. "I know, Mommy. He has my eyes."

As the double doors to the surgical wing swung shut, I was left alone in the waiting room.

Six hours.

Six excruciating, agonizing hours where time seemed to expand into eternity. Every tick of the wall clock felt like a hammer strike against my chest.

I sat in the corner chair, holding the small silver cross necklace that Ethan had given me on our two-year anniversary—the necklace I had kept hidden in my jewelry box for seven years.

At 10:00 AM, a shadow fell across the carpet.

I looked up. Ethan’s father, Charles Cole, stood there.

Charles was a retired Federal Appeals Judge—a quiet, stoic man who had always stayed out of his wife’s social machinations. He looked older, his hair completely white, holding two paper cups of coffee.

"Claire," Charles said softly.

I stood up, uncertain. "Judge Cole."

"Please," he said, sitting down in the chair beside mine and handing me a coffee. "Call me Charles."

He looked down at his hands for a long moment before speaking. "Ethan told me everything last night. About Daniel. About Lily. About what Margaret did seven years ago."

I stayed silent, taking a sip of the bitter coffee.

"I failed my son, Claire," Charles admitted, his voice heavy with deep regret. "I knew my wife was ruthless about status. I knew she interfered in Ethan’s personal life. But I chose comfort over conflict. I stayed in my study, reading legal briefs, while she destroyed my son's happiness."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small leather-bound book.

"This belonged to my father," Charles said, placing it in my hands. "It's the original deed to the Cole family lake house in Door County. It was left to Ethan in trust. Margaret tried to block his access to it years ago. Yesterday, I executed my power as trustee to transfer it entirely into Lily’s name."

I looked at the judge, seeing genuine, pained sincerity in his eyes.

"I don't care about the estate, Charles," I said softly.

"I know you don't," Charles replied gently. "That's why Ethan loved you. But your daughter deserves her birthright. And I am here to make sure no one ever makes you feel like an outsider again."
