Chapter 7 - The Awakening

The Pediatric ICU was a quiet room filled with the rhythmic beep-beep-beep of cardiac monitors.
Lily lay in the center bed, a small oxygen mask over her nose, looking tiny among the medical equipment. But her cheeks—which had been pale and faint blue for months—were now flushed with a healthy, warm pink color. Her circulation was fully restored.
Ethan and I sat on opposite sides of her bed, holding her small hands.
Around 3:00 PM, Lily’s eyelashes fluttered. She let out a small, soft sigh and slowly opened her eyes.
She looked to her left and saw me. "Mommy?"
"I'm right here, baby," I whispered, kissing her fingers. "I'm right here."
Then Lily turned her head to the right and saw Ethan sitting beside her, holding her other hand.
"Dr. Cole?" she murmured, her voice raspy from the breathing tube that had just been removed. "Did you fix my heart?"
Ethan leaned down, tears spilling unchecked down his cheeks as he kissed her small forehead. "I fixed it, Lily. It’s completely strong now. You can run, you can play, you can do whatever you want."
Lily stared at him for a long moment, her bright gray-blue eyes taking in his face, his tears, his intense warmth.
"Mommy said you were the best," Lily whispered, a tiny, faint dimple appearing on her cheek. "She was right."

Ethan let out a wet, breathless laugh, pressing his cheek against her small hand. "I love you, Lily."
Lily blinked slowly, her little fingers curling around his. "I love you too, Dr. Cole."
