Chapter 9 - The Garden in Door County

Six months later, summer arrived in full bloom.

We drove north to Door County, Wisconsin, to the historic Cole family lake house sitting on the quiet, blue shores of Lake Michigan.

The house was a magnificent wooden cottage surrounded by tall pine trees, blooming hydrangeas, and a long wooden dock stretching out over the clear, still water.

Lily ran across the lush green lawn in a bright yellow sundress, her laughter echoing over the water as she chased a butterfly. Her chest bore a faint, thin white scar—a mark of life, healing, and her father’s hands.

Ethan stood on the back porch, holding two glasses of lemonade. He wore a simple linen shirt and shorts, looking younger, happier, and more relaxed than I had ever seen him.

He walked down the steps and handed me a glass, pulling me against his side as we watched our daughter play.

"She’s fast," Ethan chuckled, kissing the top of my head. "I can barely keep up with her when we go to the park."

"That's her new heart," I smiled, leaning my head against his chest. "She's making up for lost time."

Ethan turned me around to face him, his expression growing tender and serious.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small leather box he had carried for seven years. He opened it, taking out the simple, delicate diamond ring.

"Seven years late," Ethan whispered, his eyes shining with deep, eternal love. "Claire Vance... will you marry me? Will you let me spend the rest of my life being the husband and father I was always meant to be?"

May you like

Tears of pure happiness blurred my vision as I nodded. "Yes, Ethan. Yes. A thousand times yes."

He slid the ring onto my finger—a perfect fit—and pulled me into a deep, passionate kiss beneath the warm summer sun.
