Chapter 6 - The Opening Doors

At 12:45 PM, the heavy double doors of the surgical wing clicked open.

Ethan walked out.

He was still in his blue scrubs, his surgical cap pulled off, letting his damp dark hair fall over his forehead. He looked completely exhausted, his face pale, but his gray-blue eyes were shining with a brilliant, triumphant light.

I stood up so fast my chair almost tipped over.

Ethan walked straight up to me, stopped, and let out a long, shaky breath.

"She’s fine, Claire," he whispered.

My knees gave out. Ethan caught me instantly, wrapping his arms around me, pulling me tight against his chest as I wept tears of pure, overwhelming relief.

"The unroofing was a complete success," Ethan explained, his own voice choked with emotion as he held me. "Her coronary artery is fully open. The VSD is patched. Her heart rhythm is completely stable. She's in the pediatric ICU right now, waking up from the anesthesia."

"Thank God," I sobbed. "Thank God."

Charles Cole stepped forward, laying a proud, heavy hand on Ethan’s shoulder. "Great work, son."

Ethan looked at his father, a silent understanding passing between them, before turning his gaze back down to me.

"Can I see her?" I asked.

"I'll take you to her," Ethan promised, taking my hand and locking his fingers through mine. "We'll go together."
