Chapter 4 - The Line in the Sand

Victoria Caldwell stopped dead in her tracks. For a fraction of a second, her polished, aristocratic mask slipped, revealing pure, unadulterated shock.

"What did you just say?" Victoria whispered.

Ethan walked slowly toward his mother, his tall frame blocking the light from the hallway.

"Hannah was pregnant with my twins," Ethan said, every word dripping with cold steel. "The twins I just pulled out of her body with my own hands."

Victoria quickly recovered, her jaw tightening as she cast a disgusted glance toward my bed. "Ethan, don't be naive! This girl disappeared five years ago! She comes crawling back into our hospital bleeding, claiming you're the father? She’s a grifter! She’s trying to trap you into a settlement!"

"She didn't come to us, Mother," Ethan snapped. "The ambulance brought her here while she was dying."

"It's a setup!" Victoria insisted, stepping closer to Ethan, her voice dropping into a sharp whisper. "I paid this girl half a million dollars to stay away from you five years ago! I have the receipt!"

"You mean this?" Ethan picked up the forged check from the table and shoved it directly into his mother's face. "I'm a surgeon, Mother. I analyze data for a living. This isn't Hannah's signature. It's yours. You used your corporate accountants to forge this document to break us apart."

Victoria’s eyes widened, but she refused to back down. "I did what I had to do to protect you! She was a nobody! A waitress! An orphan with no background! She would have ruined your career before it even started!"

"You didn't protect me," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "You stole five years of my life. You made me believe the woman I loved sold me out for cash."

"Ethan—"

"Get out," Ethan commanded flatly.

Victoria gasped. "Excuse me?!"

"Get out of this hospital, Victoria," Ethan said, using her first name for the very first time in his life. "If you set foot on the NICU floor, or if you come within fifty feet of Hannah or my children again, I will resign as Head of Surgery, liquidate my shares in Caldwell Healthcare, and drag this family’s name through every federal fraud investigation I can find."

"You wouldn't dare!" Victoria shrieked. "You are a Caldwell!"

"No," Ethan said, taking my hand in his, holding it tightly in front of his mother. "I am a father. Now get out before I have security escort you out."

Victoria glared at Ethan, then at me, her face contorted with pure hatred. Without another word, she turned on her high heels and stormed out of the ICU, slamming the heavy door behind her.

The room went completely quiet again.

Ethan turned back to me. His eyes were shining with unshed tears as he sank down beside my bed, holding my hand against his cheek.

"I'm sorry, Hannah," Ethan choked out, his voice breaking. "God, I am so sorry..."
