Chapter 6 - The War for Custody

While our babies grew stronger in the NICU, Victoria Caldwell was preparing her final, desperate strike.
Two weeks after the delivery, while Ethan was in an emergency four-hour heart operation on another floor, the door to my hospital suite opened.
In walked Arthur Pendelton, the Caldwell family’s chief legal counsel, accompanied by two stern-faced women wearing suits from Child Protective Services.
My blood ran cold.
"Miss Bennett," Mr. Pendelton said, placing a thick leather briefcase on my bedside table. "My name is Arthur Pendelton. I represent Victoria Caldwell and Caldwell Global Enterprises."
"Ethan told you to stay away from us," I said, my voice trembling as I clutched my hospital gown tighter around my chest.
"Dr. Caldwell is currently emotional and compromised," Pendelton replied smoothly, pulling out a stack of legal documents. "These representatives from CPS have been presented with an official petition regarding the safety and welfare of the infants, Lily and Leo Bennett."
One of the CPS workers stepped forward, her expression cold and mechanical. "Miss Bennett, we have received a report regarding your living conditions prior to admission. You were homeless, unemployed, had no prenatal care, and collapsed from severe malnutrition. Based on these factors, the state has initiated a temporary protective custody order."
"No!" I screamed, trying to swing my legs over the side of the bed, but the sharp pain in my abdominal incision made me gasp. "I was working! I was saving money! My babies were born early because of a medical emergency!"
"Mr. Pendelton’s client, Mrs. Victoria Caldwell, has offered to assume full temporary guardianship of the children," the CPS worker continued. "Given her financial resources and medical infrastructure, the state believes this is in the best interest of the infants."
"You're taking my babies?!" I sobbed, tears spilling down my cheeks. "She threatened me! She forged documents! You can't let her touch my children!"
"The order is signed by a judge, Miss Bennett," Pendelton sneered, handing a pen to the CPS worker. "You have no income, no home, and no legal standing against the Caldwell estate. Sign these voluntary surrender papers now, and Mrs. Caldwell will grant you a generous monthly stipend to leave Chicago permanently."
"She isn't signing a damn thing."
The heavy oak door slammed open so hard the metal frame groaned.
Ethan stood in the doorway. He was still in his surgical scrubs, his face pale with fury, his eyes burning with a terrifying, lethal light. Behind him stood two senior attorneys from Chicago’s top family law firm.
"Ethan!" Pendelton gasped, stepping back. "This is a private legal matter—"
"You are trespassing on my private medical floor, Arthur," Ethan roared, walking into the room like a storm. He grabbed the legal documents off my bed and tore them into shredding pieces, throwing them directly into Pendelton’s face.
"Dr. Caldwell, CPS has a court order—" the social worker began.
"CPS has a fraudulent report filed by a corrupt lawyer!" Ethan shouted, stepping directly in front of my bed, shielding me with his tall frame. "I am the biological father of those children. I have already filed a voluntary acknowledgment of paternity, and my legal team has just secured an emergency injunction from Chief Judge Harrison suspending all proceedings!"
Ethan’s lead attorney stepped forward, handing a heavy legal summons to Pendelton.
"Mr. Pendelton," the attorney said smoothly. "You and Mrs. Victoria Caldwell have been formally served with a lawsuit alleging corporate fraud, witness intimidation, illegal coercion, and filing false child endangerment reports. If you do not leave this hospital within sixty seconds, federal marshals will arrest you in the lobby."
Pendelton’s face turned white. He grabbed his briefcase, looked at Ethan’s terrifying expression, and rushed out of the room, followed quickly by the frightened CPS workers.

I collapsed back onto my pillows, sobbing hysterically.
Ethan immediately turned around, pulling me into his broad, strong chest. "Shh... I'm here, Hannah. I'm here. Nobody is taking our children. Nobody."
