Chapter 5 - The NICU Sanctuary

Three days later, I was moved out of the ICU and into a private recovery suite on the top floor of the hospital.

Ethan had personally transferred me. He had posted two private security guards outside my door, placed a strict non-disclosure order on my medical records, and spent every free moment he had—when he wasn't performing surgeries—sitting by my side.

That afternoon, Ethan rolled my wheelchair down the quiet corridor of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The NICU was a quiet room filled with gentle hums and soft blue lights. Ethan stopped my wheelchair in front of two adjacent incubators labeled Baby Girl Caldwell and Baby Boy Caldwell.

Tears welled in my eyes as I looked through the clear acrylic walls.

They were so tiny. Their skin was translucent, their little hands no bigger than my thumb, resting inside small cloth mittens. But they were breathing. Their heartbeats were strong and rhythmic on the monitors above them.

"This is Lily," Ethan whispered softly, putting his hand through the incubator port to gently touch our daughter's tiny cheek. "She weighs three pounds, eight ounces now. She's taking her feedings like a champion."

He moved to the next incubator, his voice warming with immense pride. "And this is Leo. He’s three pounds, nine ounces. He has my ears, Hannah. And your stubbornness."

I buried my face in my hands, letting out a silent, painful sob—not of sorrow, but of overwhelming relief.

Ethan dropped to his knees beside my wheelchair. He pulled my hands away from my face and held them gently in his broad, warm palms.

"I missed every milestone, Hannah," Ethan said, his eyes filled with raw emotion. "I missed hearing their heartbeats for the first time. I missed holding your hair while you had morning sickness. I missed feeling them kick inside you."

"Ethan, you didn't know—"

"I should have looked for you!" Ethan interrupted himself, his voice thick with regret. "When you left five years ago, I should have questioned my mother. I should have searched every city until I found you. I was a coward, Hannah. I let my pride get in the way of the best thing that ever happened to me."

He pressed a soft, lingering kiss against the back of my hand.

"I can't change the last five years," Ethan swore softly, looking up into my eyes. "But I swear on my life, I will spend the next fifty years making sure you and our children never suffer again."
