Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Lake

Two years later. Summer in Chicago.
The sun was setting over Lake Michigan, painting the sky in brilliant shades of pink, gold, and deep purple.
The private botanical garden overlooking the water was filled with fresh white roses, glowing string lights, and the soft melody of an acoustic violin.
Around forty of our closest friends, medical colleagues, and true loved ones sat in the white garden chairs.
At the front of the altar stood Ethan, wearing a tailored navy tuxedo, looking impossibly handsome. Standing beside him was little Leo, now a energetic two-year-old toddler in a tiny matching tuxedo, holding a velvet ring pillow with a big smile.
The music shifted into a slow, breathtaking bridal march.
I walked down the stone garden path, wearing an off-the-shoulder ivory lace gown that flowed around me like sea foam. Walking beside me, holding my left hand, was tiny Lily, wearing a matching ivory dress, happily tossing white rose petals onto the path.
When I reached the altar, Ethan took my hands in his. His eyes were filled with tears of pure, unadulterated joy.
"Seven years ago," Ethan began, his voice deep and emotion-filled, echoing through the quiet garden, "I fell in love with a woman who showed me what true courage looked like. Five years ago, I lost her because I was too blind to see the truth. And two years ago, God gave me the ultimate miracle—she walked back into my life, carrying two precious angels who saved my soul."
He slipped a magnificent diamond ring onto my finger, his hands warm and steady.
"Hannah, you are my strength, my home, and my forever. I promise to cherish you, honor you, and love you through every storm and every sunshine for the rest of my days."
Tears streamed down my cheeks as I looked into the eyes of the man who had fought through hell to bring us home.
"Ethan," I whispered, slipping a gold band onto his finger. "You saved my life on that operating table, but you gave me a future long before that. I promise to love you, support you, and stand by your side as your wife, your partner, and your best friend for all eternity."

"By the power vested in me," the officiant smiled warmly, "I now pronounce you husband and wife!"
Ethan pulled me into his arms, dipping me low over the bed of white roses, pressing his lips against mine in a deep, passionate kiss that brought roaring cheers and applause from everyone in attendance.
