Chapter 7 - Rebuilding the Foundation

A month later, the NICU doors finally opened for the happiest day of our lives.

Lily and Leo had reached four pounds eight ounces and five pounds respectively. They were breathing on their own, taking full bottles, and ready to go home.

Ethan’s private driver pulled up to the hospital entrance in a sleek, bulletproof SUV.

Ethan had bought a stunning, sunlit brownstone home in the quiet, tree-lined neighborhood of Lincoln Park—miles away from the cold, intimidating Caldwell family mansion. The brownstone had been completely renovated with a state-of-the-art nursery, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a private garden, and twenty-four-hour private security.

I sat in the backseat of the car, holding Lily against my chest, while Ethan sat beside me, gently rocking Leo in his arms.

"Welcome home, Hannah," Ethan whispered as the car pulled into the private driveway.

Walking into that home felt like stepping into a dream I had never allowed myself to have. The nursery was painted in soft sage green, filled with plush toys, handmade wooden cribs, and two rocking chairs placed side by side.

That night, after feeding the twins and placing them into their cribs, I walked out onto the second-floor balcony, watching the cool Chicago breeze rustle the autumn leaves in the garden below.

Ethan walked out behind me, carrying two cups of warm chamomile tea. He handed one to me and wrapped a soft cashmere blanket around my shoulders, stepping close behind me.

"Are you happy, Hannah?" Ethan asked softly, resting his chin on my shoulder.

"I feel like I'm waiting for someone to wake me up," I admitted, looking out at the city lights. "Five weeks ago, I was sleeping on a thin mattress in a basement apartment, wondering if I could afford diapers. Now..."

"Now you are home," Ethan said firmly, turning me around in his arms. "Where you were always supposed to be."

He looked at me with an intensity that made my heart beat faster.

"The lawsuit against my mother is moving forward," Ethan revealed quietly. "She has been removed from the hospital board. The family business is being restructured, and I have officially severed all financial ties with the Caldwell estate. Everything I own now—this house, my medical practice, my personal investments—is tied to you and the children."

"Ethan, you didn't have to ruin your family for me—"

May you like

"They weren't my family, Hannah," Ethan interrupted, touching my cheek tenderly. "A family doesn't tear people apart. A family protects each other. You and Lily and Leo are my only family."

He leaned down and kissed me—a slow, sweet, lingering kiss that tasted like forgiveness, hope, and new beginnings.
