Chapter 1 - The Debt of Blood and Paper

The afternoon heat rising off the pavement felt like an open furnace, but the air between Adrian Kang and Tessa Morgan had gone ice-cold.

"What happens now?" Adrian repeated her question, his voice dropping an octave as he stepped closer. His dark, impenetrable eyes swept over her face, lingering on the faint red mark where the airbag had grazed her cheekbone. "What happens now, Miss Morgan, is that you owe me four point two million dollars. And since your bank account currently holds two hundred and fourteen dollars and eighty-two cents, we have a mathematical problem."

Tessa’s blood ran cold. "You checked my bank account too? Is there any part of my life you didn't invade in the last forty-five seconds?"

"I don't invade lives, Miss Morgan," Adrian said smoothly, gesturing to one of his bodyguards, a giant of a man named Jin. "I evaluate risks. And right now, you are the highest liability on this street."

Before Tessa could snap back, a black town car pulled up beside the wrecked Honda Civic. A woman in a sharp gray skirt suit stepped out, holding an iPad.

"Mr. Kang," the woman said crisply. "The press has picked up the traffic report. Channel 5 news helicopters are en route. We have three minutes before this location is compromised."

Adrian didn't look at his assistant. His eyes remained locked on Tessa. "Get in the car, Tessa."

"Excuse me?" Tessa took a step back, her sneakers crunching on shattered glass. "I’m not getting into a car with a man who knows my checking balance and travels with an armed militia."

"You have two choices," Adrian said calmly, leaning against the unmarred fender of his ruined hypercar as if he had all the time in the world. "Option one: I allow security to call the Atlanta Police Department. You will be cited for driving an uninsured vehicle, reckless endangerment, and property destruction. Given the scale of the financial damage, you will be arrested on the spot. You will spend the night in Fulton County jail, and by tomorrow morning, my legal team will freeze your assets, garnish your future wages, and put a lien on your grandmother’s bakery."

Tessa’s breath hitched. Her heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. "How do you know about my grandmother’s bakery?!"

"I know everything that matters," Adrian replied without a flicker of remorse. "Option two: You step into my vehicle. We handle this privately. No police. No press. No mugshots."

Tessa looked from the smoking wreck of her twelve-year-old Civic to the imposing figure of Adrian Kang. He stood like an ancient king who had just offered a peasant a choice between the gallows and a golden cage.

"If I get in that car," Tessa said through gritted teeth, "I'm not signing anything without a lawyer."

"You won't need a lawyer, Tessa," Adrian said softly, opening the door of the heavy black SUV himself—a gesture he clearly never made for anyone else. "You’ll need a miracle."
