Chapter 2 - The Ice King’s Tower

The private elevator inside Kang Meridian Holdings did not move so much as glide. It rose sixty floors above downtown Atlanta in complete silence, surrounded by glass walls that revealed the sprawling city below.

Tessa stood in the center of the elevator, clutching her worn canvas purse like a shield. Her knees were still trembling from the adrenaline rush of the crash. Beside her stood Adrian, his jacket removed, revealing a tailored white shirt that emphasized his broad shoulders and narrow waist.

"Your grandmother, Maeve Morgan," Adrian began, breaking the silence as the floor numbers ticked rapidly upward. "She took out a secondary mortgage on her bakery three months ago to pay for your younger brother’s medical bills. Am I correct?"

Tessa turned to him, her eyes burning with pure fury. "Do you enjoy this? Digging into people's pain like it's corporate data?"

"It is data," Adrian said coldly. "And understanding your financial distress explains why you were driving like a lunatic on Peachtree Street. You were rushing to deliver the weekly payroll checks for the bakery before the bank closed."

The elevator chimed, and the doors slid open directly into a massive penthouse office. The floor was polished white marble, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Atlanta skyline. A single desk made of reclaimed black mahogany sat in the center, free of any clutter except for a thin glass terminal.

Adrian walked behind the desk and sat down. He motioned to the leather chair opposite him. "Sit."

"I prefer to stand."

"Suit yourself." Adrian tapped the terminal once. "The total cost to import the hand-formed carbon fiber panels from Italy, replace the bespoke titanium chassis, and recalibrate the hybrid powertrain will come out to exactly four million, two hundred and eighty thousand dollars."

"I don't have it," Tessa said flatly. "I won't have it if I live three lifetimes."

"I know." Adrian leaned back, crossing his hands over his lap. "Which is why you are going to work off the debt."

Tessa let out a harsh, sarcastic laugh. "Doing what? Sweeping your floors? Baking cookies for your board meetings? At minimum wage, it'll take me four hundred years!"

"I don't need a maid, Miss Morgan. And I certainly don't need cookies." Adrian paused, his gaze darkening as he leaned forward. "Three years ago, my father passed away. Under the terms of the Kang Family Trust, I must be married before my thirty-fifth birthday in order to retain absolute voting control over Kang Meridian Holdings. If I am not married by midnight on the last day of this month, forty percent of my voting shares revert to my uncle, Arthur Kang."

Tessa stared at him, bewildered. "And what does your twisted family feud have to do with me slamming into your four-million-dollar sports car?"

"My birthday is in fourteen days," Adrian said, his voice deadly serious. "And three minutes ago, my team drafted a legally binding personal employment contract. You will become my fiancée for six months. You will move into my estate, attend public functions at my side, and convince my board—and my uncle—that our engagement is genuine."

Tessa froze. "Are you insane? You want me to play trophy wife to the Ice King?!"

"In exchange," Adrian continued as if she hadn't spoken, "I will wipe out your four-point-two-million-dollar debt completely. Furthermore, I will instantly pay off your grandmother’s mortgage and clear your brother’s medical bills in full."

Tessa’s breath caught in her throat. The mortgage. Toby’s medical bills. The crushing weight that had been strangling her family for two years... wiped out with a single stroke of a pen.

"Why me?" Tessa whispered, stepping closer to the desk. "You’re a billionaire, Adrian. You could hire a supermodel or a Hollywood actress to play your fake fiancée in five minutes."

Adrian’s eyes locked onto hers with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat.

"Because, Tessa," Adrian said softly, reaching out to touch the faint scar over his left eyebrow, "a supermodel wouldn't look at me with the same fierce, unyielding hatred that you have right now. And my uncle Arthur knows me too well. If I brought him a woman who was intimidated by me, he’d spot the lie in five seconds."

May you like

He pushed a thick leather-bound contract across the desk toward her.

"What's your answer, Miss Morgan?"
