Chapter 2 - The Sanctuary of Shadows

The engine of Marcus’s old Volvo purred quietly in the darkness of the abandoned service road. The moment Elena tumbled through the gap in the stone wall, her nightgown torn and her feet caked in mud and dried blood, Marcus was out of the driver's seat. He caught her before she hit the gravel, wrapping a heavy wool blanket around her shivering frame.
"I’ve got you," he muttered, lifting her effortlessly into the passenger seat. He didn't ask questions. He didn't lecture her about the three years of silence. He simply turned the heater to its maximum setting, locked the doors, and drove away from the Vance estate.
Twenty minutes later, they arrived at a modest, secure apartment complex on the outskirts of the medical district. Marcus carried her inside, setting her down gently on a clean, plaid sofa. He immediately fetched a medical kit, kneeling before her to tend to the laceration on her foot.
As he cleaned the wound with antiseptic, Elena winced, the physical pain grounding the sheer horror of her reality. She looked at Marcus—his jaw was set, his dark eyes focused intensely on his work, a sharp contrast to the practiced, plastic smiles Richard always wore.
"They're going to look for me," Elena said, her voice hollow. "Richard will realize I’m gone. He’ll call the hospitals, the police. He’ll say I’m mentally unstable due to the high-risk pregnancy. He’s done it before when I tried to oppose his corporate decisions."
Marcus finished bandaging her foot and stood up, crossing his arms. "Let him try. You’re under my care now, Elena. Legally, as a licensed physician, if I admit you to the private wing of the university hospital under an alias for 'obstetric complications,' Richard can't touch you without a court order. And given my position as Chief of Residency, I can enforce strict privacy protocols."
Elena looked up, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "He wants the baby, Marcus. Well... he wants me dead after the baby is born. He and Bernice... they found out that the trust fund transfers entirely to him if I die in childbirth and leave a living heir. They've been giving me something. Sophia—his assistant—she’s his mistress. She’s been compounding the prenatal vitamins."
Marcus’s face went rigid, an expression of profound, terrifying anger crossing his features. He walked over to his medical bag and pulled out a sterile specimen cup. "Did you bring any of the pills?"
Elena reached into the pocket of her wet nightgown, pulling out two small red capsules she had slipped out of the bottle earlier that morning when she began to suspect Mrs. Bernice's overbearing "care."
Marcus took the capsules with gloved hands, his eyes narrowing. "I’ll run a full toxicology screen at the hospital lab first thing in the morning under a secure, anonymous panel. If there is digitalis, heavy metals, or unregulated abortifacients in these... we don't just have a divorce case, Elena. We have an attempted murder investigation."
"But the baby," Elena gasped, clutching her stomach as a sudden, sharp cramp bloomed in her abdomen. "Marcus, it hurts."
Marcus was by her side in a fraction of a second, his fingers pressing gently against her pulse point while his other hand rested lightly on her lower abdomen. His eyes softened, replacing the anger with pure professional focus. "Take a deep breath for me, El. Slow, steady breaths. The stress is causing uterine contractions. We need to get you to the clinic right now. We need an ultrasound."

Through the terror of the cramps, Elena looked into Marcus’s eyes and found the first solid ground she had stood on in years. "Promise me, Marcus. Whatever happens... save my baby."
Marcus looked at her, his voice absolute. "I will save both of you, Elena. I swear it on my life."
