Chapter 8 - The Closure of the Trap

The corridor exploded into chaos.
"Run, Richard!" Bernice screamed, throwing her heavy designer purse at the nearest detective’s face. She turned to flee toward the elevators, but two more officers stepped out of the stairwell, cutting off her escape route entirely.
Richard looked around wildly, his eyes darting from Elena to Marcus, then to the detectives closing in on him. Desperate, he lunged toward Elena, his hands reaching out as if he could clamp them around her throat and force reality back into the mold he had created.
But Marcus was faster.
With a swift, powerful movement, Marcus stepped between them, his fist connecting squarely with Richard’s jaw. The force of the blow sent Richard crashing onto the floor, his head bouncing against the wall as the detectives immediately descended upon him, pinning his arms behind his back and slamming the steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
"Richard Palmer, you are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement," the lead detective recited, his voice monotone as he dragged Richard to his feet.
"This is a mistake!" Sophia screamed as a female officer clicked handcuffs around her manicured wrists. "I didn't do anything! It was all him! He made me compound the selenium! He told me she would die naturally!"
"Save it for the grand jury, Ms. Laurent," the detective said, shoving her toward the service elevator where a separate transport unit was waiting.
Bernice was escorted out next, her rosary beads dropping to the floor, scattered and broken under the boots of the police officers. She looked at Elena one last time, her face twisted in a silent, impotent curse, before she was pushed into the elevator.
Richard was left standing before Elena, his lip bleeding, his expensive suit rumpled and ruined. He looked at his wife—the woman he had thought he could discard like a piece of useless machinery—and realized the true scale of his failure.
"You won't last a week managing the hotels without me, Elena," he spat, trying to salvage a shred of his old, venomous arrogance. "You’re too weak. You’re too emotional."
Elena stepped closer to him, looking down at his bruised face with an expression of profound indifference. "I’m not managing them alone, Richard. I have the best legal team in the state, the complete loyalty of my father’s original board, and something you never had."

She looked at Marcus, a deep, unbreakable understanding passing between them.
"I have real friends," Elena said. "Take him away."
