Chapter 7 - The Calculus of Fear

For the first time all night, Richard’s face completely changed. The plastic smirk vanished, replaced by a sudden, stark expression of absolute terror.

"Twins?" Richard stammered, his voice cracking as his golden pen slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the linoleum floor. "What do you mean, twins? The medical records... the prenatal scans... there was only ever one child!"

Bernice grabbed Marcus’s arm, her old fingers clawing through his scrubs. "You’re lying! There’s only one heir! The trust fund... the Vance estate dictates a single line of succession to the firstborn guardian!"

"Actually, Mrs. Palmer," Marcus said, calmly peeling her hand off his arm with a force that made her wince, "your family’s legal understanding is outdated. According to the original Vance Trust charter drafted by Elena’s father, in the event of a multiple birth, the guardianship of the estate cannot be held by a single surviving spouse if there is any evidence of marital misconduct or ongoing estate litigation. The trust automatically reverts to a neutral, court-appointed corporate trustee until both heirs reach the age of majority."

Sophia gasped, her eyes widening as she looked at Richard. "Richard... the shell companies... the Cayman accounts... if the trust doesn't transfer to you immediately, the banks will flag the transfers we already made! We'll be exposed!"

"Shut up, Sophia!" Richard roared, his face turning a deep, dangerous purple. He grabbed Marcus by the front of his scrubs, pinning him against the wall. "You’re pulling something, Miller! I know who you are! You’re her old puppy dog! You altered the records! I want to see my child—I want to see both of them!"

"Oh, you’ll see them, Richard," a voice called out from the doorway of the delivery room.

Richard froze. His grip on Marcus’s scrubs loosened as he turned his head slowly toward the sound.

Standing in the doorway, supported by Dr. Helen Vance and wrapped in a clean, white hospital robe, was Elena. Her face was pale, but her posture was straight, her eyes blazing with a terrifying, radiant fury that Richard had never seen in her during all their years of marriage.

Behind her, two plainclothes detectives from the Richmond State Police Department stepped out of the adjacent nurses' station, their badges gleaming under the harsh fluorescent lights.

"Elena?" Richard whispered, his knees buckling slightly as he stumbled backward. "You're... you're dead. The monitor..."

"The only thing dead here, Richard, is your freedom," Elena said, her voice clear and steady. "Did you really think I didn't hear you that night in the pantry? Did you really think I would let you and your pathetic mistress poison my children and steal my father’s life’s work?"
