Chapter 4 - The Art of the Trap

For the next five months, Elena lived in a heavily guarded, private medical suite disguised as a research laboratory in the hospital’s restricted wing. Marcus spent every spare hour by her side, monitoring her blood pressure, balancing her nutrition to counter the damage the poison had done, and helping her document every single transaction, email, and corporate record she could access remotely through a secure, encrypted server.

Meanwhile, outside the hospital walls, Richard was playing his hand exactly as they had predicted.

Through the hospital’s media monitoring, Elena watched a press conference Richard had called at the Vance Hotel headquarters. He stood at the podium, looking appropriately devastated, flanked by a weeping Mrs. Bernice and a somber Sophia, who was dressed in a conservative, dark suit.

"My beautiful wife, Elena, has been struggling with severe prenatal depression," Richard told the cameras, dabbing at his dry eyes with a linen handkerchief. "She vanished from our home months ago in a state of confusion. We have filed a missing person report, but our primary concern is the safety of our unborn child. I am offering a fifty-thousand-dollar reward for any information leading to her safe return."

Elena let out a cold, sharp laugh from her hospital bed. "Look at him. He’s already setting the stage. If I’m found dead, everyone will assume I committed suicide or had a medical crisis brought on by my 'unstable' mental state."

"He’s desperate, El," Marcus said, sitting at the foot of her bed with a stack of financial documents. "Look at these corporate filings. Richard has already transferred over thirty percent of the Vance Hotel liquid assets into a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under Sophia’s name. He’s draining the company, anticipating that he will take full control once the baby is born and you are declared legally dead or incapacitated."

"We need to let him think he’s succeeding," Elena said, her eyes flashing with a cold determination that had grown within her over the months of isolation. "Marcus, what if we give him exactly what he wants? The delivery date is approaching. The twins are healthy. If we stage the delivery... if we let him know I’ve been found, right when I go into labor..."

Marcus stood up, shaking his head vehemently. "No, Elena. It's too dangerous. The stress of having him near the delivery room could kill you. Your blood pressure is still volatile from the early poisoning."

"He has to be there, Marcus," Elena insisted, grabbing his hand. "Don't you see? If he isn't there to claim the child, he’ll flee the country the moment he realizes the fraud is exposed. We need to catch him in flagrante delicto. We need him to openly celebrate my death and claim the inheritance in front of witnesses. We need the trap to close around him completely."

Marcus looked down at their joined hands. Over the last five months, the old bond between them had reformed, stronger and deeper than before, laced with an unspoken, fierce affection that neither had dared to voice while the shadow of her marriage loomed over them.

"If we do this," Marcus said, his voice thick with emotion, "I will be the lead surgeon in that room. I will control the monitor, the staff, and the narrative. And the moment he steps across that line... I will destroy him myself."
