Chapter 3 - The Ghost Protocol

The ultrasound room at the university hospital’s private wing was dark, lit only by the green and blue glow of the monitoring screens. Marcus worked quickly, his movements fluid and precise as he applied the cold gel to Elena’s belly. The room was silent save for the rapid, mechanical thump-thump-thump that suddenly filled the air.
Elena let out a ragged breath, the tears flowing freely now. "Is it... is it okay?"
Marcus stared at the monitor, a look of profound disbelief and intense concentration crossing his face. He adjusted the probe, zooming in on the grainy, black-and-white image. He didn't speak for a full minute, his eyes tracking two distinct, rhythmic pulses on the screen.
"Elena," Marcus said, his voice hushed, almost reverent. "Look here."
She leaned forward, straining her eyes. On the screen, clearly separated by a thin, delicate membrane, were two tiny, perfectly formed shapes.
"It's not just one baby," Marcus whispered, a rare smile breaking through his serious demeanor. "It’s twins. You’re carrying twins, El. Fraternal twins."
Elena’s hand flew to her mouth. Twins. The realization hit her with the force of a tidal wave. Two lives. Two innocent souls trapped in the middle of a war for her father's fortune. But the joy was instantly shadowed by a terrifying realization.
"Richard doesn't know," Elena whispered, her voice trembling. "The private clinic he forced me to go to... the doctor was a friend of his mother's. They only ever told us it was a single pregnancy. They must have hidden it, or maybe the early scans missed it... No, Richard's doctor would have told him if he knew."
"This is our leverage," Marcus said, his mind working at lightning speed as he wiped the gel from her skin. "If Richard believes there is only one heir, his entire legal strategy is built around a single child. If you go into hiding—if we create a scenario where you vanish from the public eye—we can use this medical secret to catch him entirely off guard when the time comes."
The door to the clinic room opened quietly, and an older woman with sharp grey hair and a formidable demeanor stepped in. Dr. Helen Vance—no relation to Elena, but the head of the Obstetrics Department and a legendary advocate for women’s safety.
"The toxicology report came back from the lab, Marcus," Dr. Vance said, her face grim. She handed a printed sheet to Marcus, who read it quickly, his jaw tightening until the bone showed against his skin.
"What is it?" Elena asked, terror rising in her throat.
"High concentrations of selenium and synthetic endocrine disruptors," Marcus said, his voice shaking with restrained fury. "Not enough to kill you instantly, Elena. But enough over a period of months to induce severe preeclampsia, placental abruption, and ultimate cardiovascular collapse during labor. They were engineering a natural-looking death in the delivery room."

Dr. Vance stepped toward Elena, taking her hand. "My dear, you are officially entering our high-risk protective protocol. As of this moment, Elena Vance does not exist in the hospital records. You are listed as 'Patient X-99.' No one enters this floor without my personal clearance. We are going to carry these babies to term, and we are going to build an ironclad case that will put your husband away for the rest of his miserable life."
Elena looked out the window at the distant lights of the city. Somewhere out there, Richard and Sophia were celebrating her disappearance, believing she had run away out of instability. Let them believe it. Let them think they were winning. The war had officially begun.
