Chapter 2 - The Architect of Shadows

Three weeks later, Adeline sat in a high-rise office overlooking the Chicago skyline. She was no longer wearing the oversized sweaters and plain jeans she had adopted to please Chase. She wore a sharp, charcoal-gray suit, her hair pulled back into a severe, elegant knot.
Her body was still healing, the physical scar of her loss a permanent ache, but her mind was a blade.
“The downtown project is failing,” Nolan said, leaning against the glass. “Chase’s new designs, the ones he stole from your early archives? They’re structurally flawed. The concrete mixtures he chose to save money won't hold the weight of the cantilevered glass.”
Adeline didn't look up from her laptop. She was already rerouting the supply chain for his primary contractors. “He thinks he’s a builder, Nolan. He’s just a man who knows how to talk to investors. He never understood the math.”
“He thinks you’re dead, or at least he doesn't care. He told the press you ‘ran off’ due to a nervous breakdown after the miscarriage.”
Adeline’s fingers stopped. A cold, hollow laugh escaped her. “A breakdown. That’s clever. It keeps the public from asking where his lead architect went.”
“He’s courting the Miller family today,” Nolan said. “They control the zoning permits for the entire West Side. If he gets that deal, he’s untouchable for another decade.”
Adeline stood up. She walked to the window, watching the city below. She had designed this skyline. She knew every girder, every foundation, every vulnerability.

“He wants to be a king,” she said softly. “Let him reach for the crown. I’ll make sure the platform collapses under his feet.”
She pulled up a file on her screen—the Jones Prescott signature blueprints. “I didn't lose my baby for nothing, Nolan. I didn't lose three years of my life for nothing. He’s going to learn that the Prescott name isn't just a title. It’s a legacy, and I am the one who writes the history.”
