Chapter 3 - The Gala of Mirrors

The charity gala was supposed to be the launch of Chase’s new empire. He stood at the center of the ballroom, Brielle by his side, looking every bit the self-made billionaire he claimed to be.
He didn't see the woman in the back of the room, dressed in a gown of midnight blue, her face partially obscured by a veil.
Adeline moved through the crowd like a ghost. She heard the whispers—how Chase had saved the firm, how he had innovated, how he was the future of Chicago development. She listened, her heart rate steady.
She approached the Miller family patriarch, Julian Miller.
“Mr. Miller,” she said, her voice a calm, cultured tone he hadn't heard in years.
Julian turned, his eyes narrowing. “Adeline? Good God, everyone said you were... that you weren't well.”
“I’m quite well, Julian,” she said, handing him a tablet. “I think you should look at the site reports for the West Side development. Specifically, the load-bearing calculations for the secondary foundation.”
Julian tapped the screen. His face paled. “This... this says the structure will fail within five years. That it’s a death trap.”
“The designs Chase Prescott presented to you were drafted based on a structural integrity report I prepared three years ago,” she said, her voice ringing clear in the sudden silence of the corner. “But he changed the materials. He cut the budget. He chose profit over safety.”

Julian looked at Chase, then back at Adeline. “If this is true, he’s ruined.”
“It’s not just true,” Adeline said, turning to look at the man she had once loved. “It’s a pattern.”
