Chapter 10 - Where the Sunshine Stays

Two years later.
The sun was setting over the rolling hills of the Cross estate, painting the sky in brilliant hues of violet, gold, and pink.
On the back porch of the mansion, a wooden swing rocked gently in the evening breeze.
Carol sat on the swing, leaning her head comfortably against Nathaniel’s shoulder. Wrapped in a soft blanket beside them was six-year-old Ivy, fast asleep after a long day of playing in the garden.
In Nathaniel’s arms rested a tiny, three-month-old baby boy with dark hair and bright blue eyes—their son, Leo Cross.
Nathaniel looked down at his sleeping son, his thumb lightly stroking the baby's soft cheek, before turning to kiss the top of Carol’s head.
"He has your chin," Carol whispered softly, resting her hand over Nathaniel’s chest.
"And he has your gentle heart," Nathaniel replied softly, pulling her closer against his side.
From the garden below, the gentle chime of the evening bells echoed across the quiet land. The estate, which had once been a cold fortress of fear and criminal enterprise, was now a sanctuary filled with warmth, legitimate prosperity, and endless love.
Ivy stirred softly in her sleep, reaching out her small hand to pat her baby brother’s foot, before turning her face into her mother’s side.
"Handsome man?" Ivy murmured sleepily, her eyes half-open.
"Yes, little one?" Nathaniel answered softly.
"Is Miss Vanessa ever coming back?"
Nathaniel smiled warmly, looking at his wife, his daughter, and his newborn son—the true empire he had built from the ashes of his past.
"No, little bird," Nathaniel whispered, kissing his daughter’s forehead. "The bad monsters are all gone. There's only light here now."
Carol looked up into his eyes, her heart filled with a peace so absolute it felt like a dream. She reached up, pressing her lips gently against his jaw.

"Home," Carol whispered.
"Home," Nathaniel echoed, holding his family tight as the stars began to bloom across the quiet Illinois sky.
