Chapter 5 - Into the Lion's Den

An abandoned meatpacking plant on the southern edge of the industrial district stood dark against the heavy gray sky. Rain poured off the rusted tin roof, creating a steady, rhythmic thrumming sound inside the cavernous space.
Inside, small three-year-old Ivy sat on a wooden crate, her arms wrapped tightly around her knees, her big brown eyes wide with fear.
Standing ten feet away was Arthur Hale, looking disheveled, his expensive suit rumpled, drinking whiskey from a crystal glass. Beside him stood Dimitri Volkov, a massive man with scarred knuckles and cold, icy blue eyes, flanked by six heavily armed mercenaries.
"This is madness, Volkov," Arthur Hale snapped, his hand shaking as he took another drink. "Kidnapping a servant's child? If Nathaniel finds out—"
"Shut up, Arthur," Volkov growled in his heavy accent. "You wanted your shipping routes back. Cross destroyed your family name in front of the entire city. This child is his soft spot. Did you see his face at the wedding? He cancelled a billionaire merger for this little girl and her mother. He will give us whatever we demand to get her back."
Ivy pulled her stuffed bear closer to her chest, whispering softly to herself, "Handsome man will come... Mommy said handsome man is brave..."
Volkov chuckled darkly, walking over toward the child. "Your 'handsome man' is a businessman, little girl. He doesn't come into places like this."
Suddenly, the heavy iron doors at the front of the facility didn't just open—they exploded inward with a deafening blast of fire and steel.
Smoke filled the room instantly. Before the mercenaries could raise their rifles, red tactical laser sights cut through the haze with blinding precision.
Four shots echoed through the cavernous room—four mercenaries dropped to the concrete floor instantly.
Through the clearing smoke walked Nathaniel Cross. He wore a heavy black coat, his face devoid of any human emotion, carrying a high-caliber weapon resting comfortably in his right hand. Beside him was Marcus, leading a dozen elite tactical guards who flooded the room, securing every exit in five seconds flat.
Arthur Hale dropped his whiskey glass, his knees knocking together in sheer terror. "Nathaniel... wait! This wasn't my idea! Volkov forced me!"
Volkov grabbed Ivy by the collar of her jacket, pulling her up and pressing a sidearm against her small shoulder. "Step back, Cross! Step back or I end her right now!"
Nathaniel didn't stop walking. He stopped ten feet away, his dark eyes looking down at Ivy first.
"Are you hurt, Ivy?" Nathaniel asked, his voice suddenly amazingly gentle amidst the violence.
Ivy shook her head bravely, tears spilling down her dirty cheeks. "No... but he took my teddy bear's ribbon."
Nathaniel looked up at Volkov, his eyes turning into two black pools of absolute death. "Dimitri. You have three seconds to put her down."
"You think I'm afraid of you, Cross?" Volkov sneered, his grip tightening. "Give me the transfer codes for the eastern shipping lanes, or—"
A single, silent flash echoed from the high rafters above the ceiling.
A high-powered sniper bullet shattered the wrist of the hand holding the gun. Volkov screamed in agony as his weapon clattered to the floor, his grip on Ivy loosening instantly.
Before Volkov could react further, Nathaniel crossed the distance in a fraction of a second. He slammed his heavy boot into Volkov’s chest, sending the massive Russian crashing violently into a stack of wooden pallets, then picked Ivy up into his left arm, cradling her head safely against his shoulder.
Nathaniel turned his sidearm toward Arthur Hale, who was already on his knees, weeping hysterically.
"Please... Nathaniel... spare me!" Arthur begged, pressing his forehead against the damp concrete.
"Marcus," Nathaniel said coldly, holding Ivy close as she buried her face in his neck. "Hand Mr. Hale and Mr. Volkov over to the federal authorities along with the financial records of their illegal human trafficking ring. Let them spend the rest of their lives in a federal supermax."

"Understood, Boss," Marcus replied, signaling his men to secure the prisoners.
Nathaniel walked out of the burning facility into the cool rain, holding the little girl tight against his chest, her heart beating steadily against his.
