Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Doubt

Despite the happiness blooming inside the estate, the transition from housekeeper to the wife of the state’s most powerful man was not without its hurdles.

High society in the city was ruthless. Rumors began to circulate in elite social circles about "the maid who trapped the kingpin," alleging that Carol had orchestrated the incident at the wedding to elevate her social status.

At a high-end charity gala held downtown—Carol’s first official public appearance as the director of the foundation—the whispers were palpable.

Carol stood near the grand marble staircase, wearing a stunning midnight-blue silk gown that Clara had helped her choose, holding a glass of sparkling water. A group of wealthy socialites, former friends of Vanessa Hale, gathered a few feet away, casting deliberate, loud sneers in her direction.

"It's unbelievable," one woman in a diamonds whispered loudly enough for Carol to hear. "Nathaniel Cross traded a Hale heiress for a widow who used to clean his toilets. She probably staged the whole thing with her kid."

Carol’s hand tightened around her glass. A wave of deep inadequacy washed over her. She knew she didn't come from money, that she didn't have a corporate pedigree, and that these people would always look down on her past.

Before she could step away toward the terrace, a heavy, reassuring arm wrapped firmly around her waist.

Nathaniel stepped up beside her, looking towering, immaculate, and terrifying in his tailored tuxedo. His presence instantly silenced the whispering group of women.

"Ladies," Nathaniel said, his voice dropping into a chilling tone that cut through the music in the ballroom. "I couldn't help but overhear your fascinating discussion."

The women turned pale, backing up slightly. "Mr. Cross... we were just—"

"You were speaking about the woman who single-handedly reformed our city's foundation system," Nathaniel said coldly, his arm pulling Carol flush against his side. "The woman who possesses more honor, courage, and dignity in her little finger than your entire families have possessed for generations."

Nathaniel glared at them with eyes that had made cartels surrender. "If I hear a single disrespectful word about my fiancé in this city ever again, I will personally audit every business contract your husbands hold with my firm. Am I clear?"

The women nodded frantically, murmuring quick apologies before fleeing into the crowd like frightened deer.

Carol looked up at Nathaniel, her heart swelling with a deep, profound love. "You didn't have to do that."

May you like

"I will do that every day for the rest of my life if I have to," Nathaniel said softly, turning to face her. He took her chin gently between his fingers, raising her face to his. "You belong here, Carol. Not because of my money, but because you have a heart that transformed this entire city. Never shrink yourself for people who live in the shadows."

He leaned down and kissed her lips passionately in the center of the grand ballroom, in front of every camera, every politician, and every titan in the city, declaring his devotion to the world without a single word of hesitation.
