Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary

The black SUV pulled into the driveway of the Cross estate under a clear, star-filled night sky.

The front doors of the mansion burst open before the vehicle even came to a complete stop. Carol rushed down the marble steps, her face pale, her eyes wild with agony, followed closely by Clara.

When the rear door opened and Nathaniel stepped out carrying Ivy in his arms, wrapped in his heavy black coat, Carol let out a breathless, desperate sob.

"Ivy!" Carol fell to her knees on the driveway as Nathaniel set the little girl down.

Ivy ran into her mother’s open arms, both of them weeping, clinging to each other as if the world around them had ceased to exist.

Nathaniel stood beside them, his heavy coat resting over his shoulder, watching the mother and daughter reunite. Clara stepped up beside her brother, gently slipping her arm through his.

"You brought her back," Clara whispered softly, wiping a tear from her cheek. "I knew you would."

"No one touches what belongs to this family," Nathaniel said softly, though his eyes remained fixed on Carol, who was looking up at him with a gaze filled with such raw, profound gratitude that it made his breath catch in his throat.

Carol stood up, holding Ivy tightly against her hip, and walked over to Nathaniel.

"Mr. Cross..." she sobbed, unable to find the words. "I... I don't know how to ever repay you. My life is yours. Whatever you need, forever."

Nathaniel reached out, his long fingers gently wiping a smudge of dirt from Carol’s soft cheek. The touch was so gentle, so reverent, that Carol’s breath hitched.

"You don't owe me anything, Carol," Nathaniel said, his dark voice vibrating with a quiet, intense sincerity. "You and Ivy gave me back my humanity. I should be thanking you."

Ivy leaned out from her mother’s arms, extending her tiny hand, holding out a crumpled white rose she had picked from the conservatory garden before she was taken.

"For you, handsome man," Ivy lisped softly, smiling through her tears. "Because you fought the bad monsters."

Nathaniel took the small white rose, holding it delicately between his calloused fingers as if it were the most precious treasure in the world.

"Thank you, little one," he murmured, a rare, breathtakingly handsome smile breaking across his stern face. "Now let's go inside. It's past your bedtime."
