Chapter 3 - War in the Shadows

The night air outside the estate grew biting cold as a light rain began to fall over the city skyline.
In the subterranean command center beneath the mansion, Nathaniel stood before a wall of glowing monitors displaying stock market trends, encrypted communication logs, and live satellite feeds of the city’s industrial docks.
"Arthur Hale is striking fast," Marcus explained, pointing a laser at a rapidly dropping red trendline on the center screen. "He’s dumping his family's shares in our joint logistics venture, driving the price down to trigger an emergency margin call. If the board panics, they’ll force a vote to remove you as chairman by Friday."
"And the Russians?" Nathaniel asked, his hands resting flat on the steel conference table.
"Dimitri Volkov," Marcus replied softly. "Volkov’s men were spotted meeting with Arthur Hale at the waterfront hotel two hours ago. Volkov wants control of the eastern railyards. Vanessa’s failed marriage gave them the excuse they needed to declare open war."
Nathaniel’s jaw tightened. Volkov was a ruthless operator who had been trying to breach Nathaniel’s territory for five years. He was known for targeting family members, striking at soft vulnerabilities rather than engaging in direct corporate battle.
Suddenly, Nathaniel’s thoughts drifted back up to the east wing, where Carol and Ivy were currently asleep in their new quarters.
"Double the perimeter guards," Nathaniel commanded sharply. "Nobody enters or leaves this estate without my personal biometric clearance. Marcus, put two tactical teams on the east wing quarters."
"Boss," Marcus hesitated, looking at Nathaniel closely. "Are you sure it's wise to keep the housekeeper and her kid inside the house during a syndicate war? Volkov will do a deep dive on everyone in your inner circle within twenty-four hours."
"They aren't collateral, Marcus," Nathaniel said coldly, his dark eyes flashing with a dangerous light. "They are under my roof. Anyone who steps toward them dies."
Meanwhile, up on the third floor of the east wing, Carol was sitting on the edge of a luxurious king-sized bed, watching Ivy sleep peacefully under a heavy duvet. The room was larger than the entire apartment she had rented after her husband died. High ceilings, silk drapes, and a private balcony overlooking the rose gardens.
Yet, Carol couldn't shake the creeping feeling of anxiety.
She stood up and walked to the window, watching the shadowy figures of armed guards pacing through the rain-slicked gardens below. She knew what Nathaniel Cross was—the city called him a businessman, but everyone knew he was a king who ruled the dark places between law and power.
A soft knock at her bedroom door startled her.
Carol opened it slowly to find Clara Cross standing in the hallway, holding two warm mugs of cocoa.
"Can't sleep either?" Clara asked with a soft, comforting smile.
"I feel like I'm living in a dream that's about to turn into a nightmare," Carol confessed, stepping aside to let Clara in. "Miss Cross... your brother is doing too much for us. He's putting himself in danger."

"Nathaniel hasn't cared about anything other than business for six years," Clara said, walking over to sit on the plush velvet sofa. "When our parents died, he shut down his heart. He almost married Vanessa because he thought a political transaction was all he deserved."
Clara looked up at Carol, her eyes soft and sincere. "Today, when he saw those marks on your wrist, I saw something in my brother’s eyes I haven't seen since we were children. You and Ivy didn't just save him from a bad marriage, Carol. You reminded him that he's still human."
