Chapter 10 - The Golden Hour

The autumn sun painted the Lake Forest estate in shades of gold and amber.

Two years had passed since the day Norah had jumped into the Chicago River. The water was still cold, but the estate was filled only with warmth.

Norah sat on the terrace, cradling their newborn son, Leo—named in honor of the loyal friend who had helped them during their darkest hour. The baby had his father's thick dark hair and deep grey eyes, looking peaceful as he slept in her arms.

Beside her, Clara, now nine, was showing her father a drawing she had made at school. Stellan sat on the stone steps, his face relaxed, his laughter rich and happy as he signed back to his daughter, praising her work.

Danny was packing a suitcase into his car, preparing to leave for his first semester at Northwestern University—a dream he had once thought impossible.

"I'll see you guys for Thanksgiving!" Danny called out, waving to them.

"Study hard, Danny!" Norah called back, blowing him a kiss.

Stellan walked over, wrapping his arms around Norah and their sleeping son. He kissed Norah’s cheek, his breath warm against her skin.

"Are you happy, my love?" Stellan whispered, his eyes looking out over the peaceful waters of Lake Michigan.

Norah looked at her family—the strong, devoted husband who had shed his armor for her, the beautiful daughter who had brought them together, and the healthy son who represented their future.

"I have never been happier, Stellan," she said, leaning her head against his chest.

And there, under the warm golden sun, surrounded by the family they had fought so hard to protect, Norah knew their story was no longer about survival. It was about living—fully, beautifully, and forever bound by a love that had conquered the shadows of Chicago.
