Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

The next morning, the storm broke.

Norah woke up to the sound of sirens in the distance. She dressed quickly and ran downstairs, finding the foyer filled with state police and federal investigators.

Stellan stood in the center of the room, his face an impenetrable mask of stone. Beside him stood his chief legal counsel, a sharp-eyed woman named Evelyn.

"Mr. Vane," a federal agent in a dark trench coat said, holding up a search warrant. "We have credible information that a shipment of illegal firearms is currently being stored in Warehouse 4 at the Calumet Port. The warehouse is registered under your personal name."

"My ports are open to inspection at any time, Agent Vance," Stellan said, his voice calm, almost bored. "But you will find nothing. My company does not deal in weapons."

"We’ll see about that," the agent said, gesturing to his men to begin searching the office.

Norah watched from the stairs, her hand gripping the railing. She saw Victor standing near the window, his face pale, sweat shining on his forehead. He was looking at his phone, his thumbs moving rapidly.

"Norah," a tiny hand tugged at her skirt.

She looked down to see Clara, her brown eyes filled with fear. The little girl could not hear the sirens or the shouting, but she could read the tension in the air. She signed: 'Are the bad men here for Daddy?'

Norah knelt down, forcing a reassuring smile. 'No, sweetie. Your daddy is very strong. Everything is going to be okay.'

But she knew it wasn't.

Stellan’s eyes found Norah’s across the crowded room. For a brief second, the icy composure of his grey eyes flickered, replaced by a silent plea: Keep her safe.

Norah nodded. She took Clara’s hand and led her back upstairs, away from the chaos.

In the hallway, she ran into Beatrice, who was carrying a tray of tea and medicine for Danny.

"Oh, Miss Norah," Beatrice said, her voice filled with motherly concern. "What a terrible mess. Poor Mr. Vane. He works so hard to protect this family, and now this."

"It’s a setup, Beatrice," Norah said, her eyes narrowing. "Someone inside this house is feeding information to the feds. Someone who has access to the shipping manifests."

Beatrice’s hand trembled slightly, the teacups rattling on the silver tray. "Surely not, Miss Norah. We are all loyal here. Now, if you'll excuse me, I must bring Daniel his medication. He’s been feeling quite weak today."

Norah’s protective instincts flared. Danny had been doing so well; why would he suddenly feel weak?

"I'll take it to him, Beatrice," Norah said, reaching for the tray.

"Oh, no, it's my duty—"

"I said, I'll take it," Norah insisted, her tone leaving no room for argument.

She took the tray from the housekeeper's hands. As she did, she noticed a faint, sweet almond scent coming from the small cup of liquid medicine meant for Danny.

Norah was a hospital worker. She had spent enough time around nurses and doctors to recognize the signs of chemical compounds. Almonds... cyanide. Or a localized neurotoxin that would mimic a sudden kidney failure.

Her blood ran cold.

She looked at Beatrice, but the older woman's face had already smoothed back into a mask of polite obedience. "Very well, Miss Norah. Let me know if Daniel needs anything else."

Norah walked toward Danny's room, her hands shaking. The betrayal wasn't just near the walls. It was in the bread they ate, the tea they drank, and the air they breathed.
