Chapter 2 - The Mansion on the Lake

The black SUV wound its way through the iron gates of the Vane estate in Lake Forest. The property was massive, bordered by towering pine trees and the grey, turbulent waters of Lake Michigan.

Norah sat in the backseat, her body still aching from the previous day's ordeal. Beside her, Danny was staring out the window, his eyes wide as they passed a series of armed security guards patrolling the perimeter with guard dogs.

"This doesn't look like a safe place, Norah," Danny whispered, his voice tense. "It looks like a fortress."

"It's just for a few days, Danny," she lied, trying to reassure him. "Until I can get back to work."

The vehicle pulled up to the grand stone portico of the mansion. The front doors opened, and Stellan Vane descended the steps. He was dressed more casually today—a dark wool sweater and black trousers—but his posture remained just as guarded.

Beside him stood a woman with a severe bun and a crisp navy dress. This was Beatrice, the head housekeeper, who had served the Vane family for twenty years.

"Welcome," Stellan said as the driver opened Norah's door. He extended a hand to help her out.

Norah took it, his palm warm and steady against her cold fingers. "Thank you, Mr. Vane."

"Stellan," he corrected.

As they walked into the grand foyer, a flash of red caught Norah’s eye.

Clara, the little girl from the river, stood at the top of the stairs. She was wearing a soft yellow dress now, her dark hair dry and fluffy, her cheeks rosy. She looked down at Norah, her big brown eyes filled with a mixture of curiosity and shyness.

Norah smiled, her heart melting. She raised a hand and waved.

Clara hesitated, then flew down the stairs, ignoring Beatrice’s soft gasp. She ran straight to Norah, wrapping her small arms around Norah’s waist.

Norah gasped as her bruised ribs protested, but she didn't pull away. She knelt down, wrapping her arms around the little girl, holding her tight.

Clara pulled back and began to move her hands rapidly in American Sign Language.

Norah looked up at Stellan, confused. "What is she saying?"

"She is saying, 'Thank you for bringing me back to the light,'" Stellan translated, his voice softening in a way that surprised even his housekeeper. "She remembers the cold. She remembers you holding her."

Norah looked back at Clara, her eyes stinging with tears. She raised her hands, spelling out her name in basic finger-spelling she had learned during her hospital cafeteria shifts. N-O-R-A-H.

Clara’s face lit up with a brilliant, gap-toothed smile. She took Norah’s hand, pulling her toward the grand dining room where a warm lunch had been prepared.

As they walked, Stellan watched them, his expression complex.

"Beatrice," Stellan murmured to the housekeeper, who remained near the door. "Make sure their rooms are perfect. And tell the security team that Norah and Danny Ashby are to be treated with the same level of protection as my own daughter."

"Of course, Mr. Vane," Beatrice said, her voice smooth and obedient.

But as Stellan turned to follow his guests, Beatrice’s eyes narrowed. She slipped her hand into her apron pocket, her fingers brushing against a burner phone.

The betrayal was already inside the walls, and it had been waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
