Chapter 3 - Whisper of the Traitor

For the first three days, life at the Vane estate was a strange, luxurious dream.

Danny was transported to a state-of-the-art dialysis center where he received treatment that didn't leave him exhausted and pale. Norah spent her days with Clara, playing in the sunroom, learning more sign language, and reading books.

The little girl had bonded with Norah in a way she never had with her previous nannies. To Clara, Norah was the brave angel who had conquered the dark water.

Stellan was often gone, managing his vast empire, but every evening he returned for dinner. He was a man of few words, but he listened intently when Clara signed about her day, his grey eyes softening whenever he looked at his daughter.

Yet, beneath the surface of this paradise, the currents of danger were swirling.

It was a Thursday evening, near midnight. Norah couldn't sleep; her lungs still felt slightly tight, and the silence of the massive mansion was deafening compared to her noisy city apartment. She decided to go downstairs to the kitchen to fetch a glass of warm milk.

As she stepped onto the grand staircase, she heard muted voices coming from the study below.

"The federal prosecutors are closing in on the shipping docks, Stellan," a sharp, familiar voice said. It was Victor, Stellan’s brother-in-law and the chief financial officer of Vane Enterprises. "We need to move the offshore funds before they freeze the accounts."

"We move nothing," Stellan's voice replied, cold and authoritative. "If we move the funds now, it looks like an admission of guilt. The docks are clean, Victor. I spent five years purging the syndicate's illicit factions. If there is contraband moving through my ports, someone is doing it behind my back."

"You're getting paranoid," Victor muttered. "Ever since Clara’s accident, you’ve been looking for ghosts."

"Clara’s accident was not an accident," Stellan growled, the sound sending a chill down Norah’s spine. "The lock on the riverwalk gate was cut. She didn't slip, Victor. Someone pushed her. And when I find out who, they will learn that the man I used to be is not dead. He was only sleeping."

Norah held her breath, leaning against the wooden banister.

"We need to tighten security," Victor said, his tone shifting. "And what about the maid? The one you brought into the house? She’s a liability, Stellan. She knows too much about Clara's routine."

"Norah Ashby saved my daughter's life," Stellan said, his voice flat and absolute. "If you breathe a word against her again, Victor, I will personally remove you from this company."

A heavy silence followed.

Norah backed away from the stairs, her heart racing. She realized then that Stellan Vane was a man besieged. He was fighting a war on two fronts: the law was chasing his company, and an invisible enemy was trying to destroy his family.

As she hurried back to her room, she didn't notice a shadow standing near the end of the corridor.

Beatrice, the trusted housekeeper, stood in the darkness, her eyes fixed on Norah's retreating back. She pulled out her burner phone and typed a single message: “The target is suspicious. We need to accelerate the plan.”
