Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

The wedding was held on the lawns of the Lake Forest estate, under a massive white canopy decorated with thousands of white roses and twinkling fairy lights.

There were no politicians, no syndicate captains, and no corporate vipers in attendance. Only the people who mattered: the staff of the new pediatric foundation, Danny, Evelyn, and the few true friends they treasured.

Clara, wearing a matching white flower-girl dress and a crown of roses, walked down the aisle proudly, holding a velvet box containing two gold rings.

When Norah appeared at the top of the stone steps, her dress of pure white lace trailing behind her, Stellan’s breath caught. He stood at the altar, his grey eyes shining with a profound, overwhelming devotion.

The sound of a harp filled the warm spring air as she walked down the aisle, her hand resting on Danny's arm.

When she reached the altar, Stellan took her hands in his, his large palms warm and steady.

"We started this in the freezing cold, Norah," Stellan said, his voice carrying clearly across the lawn. "I was a man who lived in the dark, trusting no one, waiting for the end. But you didn't hesitate. You jumped into the water for my daughter, and in doing so, you saved us both. Today, I promise to spend every day of my life making sure you never have to be cold again. I promise to love you, to cherish you, and to be your partner forever."

Tears of pure happiness blurred Norah’s vision. "I do," she whispered.

The priest smiled. "By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Stellan pulled her into his arms, lifting her slightly off her feet as he kissed her—a deep, passionate, and beautifully real kiss that signaled the true beginning of their future. The crowd erupted into joyous cheers, Clara and Danny clapping enthusiastically at their feet.

As the reception began, Norah noticed a small, quiet moment.

Danny was dancing with Clara, his face glowing with health, while Clara’s laughter echoed through the garden.

Stellan wrapped his arm around Norah’s waist, pulling her close. "Do you see that?" he whispered.

"I see a family," Norah said, resting her head against his shoulder.

"That's my queen," Stellan smiled, kissing the tip of her nose.
