Chapter 10 - The Warmth of Home

Two years later.

Spring had arrived in Chicago. The Valenti estate had been completely restored, transformed from a cold, fortress-like mansion into a warm, vibrant family home filled with flowers, sunlight, and music.

The violence of the past was gone. Dominic had systematically legitimacy-funded the Valenti empire, transitioning the family’s wealth into clean real estate, technology, and global philanthropy. The dark shadows of his past were finally put to rest.

On the manicured front lawn overlooking Lake Michigan, a grand white marquee was set up, filled with white roses and fairy lights.

Inside the mansion, Maya stood before a floor-to-ceiling mirror in her bridal suite.

She wore a breathtaking silk wedding dress with delicate lace sleeves, her hair pinned up with pearls. Beside her, eight-year-old Elena stood in a matching flower girl dress, proudly holding a basket of yellow rose petals.

“You look like a princess, Maya,” Elena said happily.

“And you look like a queen,” Maya smiled, kneeling to adjust Elena’s ribbon.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Victor—now dressed in a tailored navy suit, looking more like an executive than a lieutenant—stepped inside holding a small black velvet box.

“It’s time, Mrs. Valenti,” Victor said with a respectful smile. “The boss is waiting.”

Maya took a deep breath, took Elena’s hand, and walked down the grand marble staircase that had once been covered in smoke and blood.

The outdoor ceremony was breathtaking. Over two hundred guests—university professors, charity leaders, reformed business partners, and close friends—stood as Maya walked down the aisle toward the altar.

Standing at the end of the aisle was Dominic.

He wore a custom black tuxedo, looking impossibly handsome. His hair was streaked with silver, his posture tall and commanding, but as his pale grey eyes landed on Maya walking toward him, his marble composure melted into absolute, reverence-filled adoration.

Beside him stood Noah, Maya’s former criminology professor, who was acting as Dominic’s best man after Maya had completed her degree with top honors.

When Maya reached the altar, Dominic took her hands in his. His touch was warm, steady, and full of promise.

The priest spoke words of love, resilience, and second chances.

“Dominic Valenti,” the priest asked, “do you take Maya Santos to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, until death do you part?”

Dominic looked into Maya’s hazel eyes, his voice echoing clearly across the sunlit grounds.

“I do,” Dominic said. “I give her my life, my honor, and my heart, forever.”

“And do you, Maya Santos, take Dominic Valenti to be your lawfully wedded husband?”

Maya smiled, a tear of pure happiness slipping down her cheek.

“I do,” she whispered. “With all my heart.”

“By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”

Dominic didn't hesitate. He pulled Maya into his arms, lifting her slightly off her feet as he kissed her deeply under the canopy of white roses. The crowd burst into loud cheers and applause, while Elena tossed her yellow petals high into the air.

Later that evening, as the sun set over the lake, painting the sky in shades of gold and purple, Maya walked out onto the private balcony overlooking the water.

She leaned against the railing, feeling the cool breeze on her face. She was no longer cold. She would never be cold again.

A pair of strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind. Dominic pulled her close against his chest, resting his chin on her shoulder.

“What are you thinking about?” he asked softly, kissing her neck.

Maya leaned back against him, covering his hands with hers.

“I was thinking about fourteen minutes,” she murmured, looking out at the golden water.

“Fourteen minutes?”

“I missed my last bus by fourteen minutes,” Maya said, turning in his arms to look up into his striking pale eyes. “I thought it was the worst luck of my life. I thought I was lost.”

Dominic smiled softly, leaning down to press his forehead against hers.

May you like

“You weren't lost, my love,” Dominic whispered softly. “You were just on your way home to us.”

Maya smiled, wrapping her arms around her husband’s neck as the stars began to appear in the Chicago sky—a safe harbor, built to last forever.
