Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

For three days, the private ICU wing of St. Jude’s Hospital was under total military-style lockdown.

Dominic had survived emergency surgery to repair a shattered shoulder blade and internal bleeding. The Valenti family’s legal team had moved swiftly, wiping away all public records of the estate siege, labeling the incident as an illegal gas explosion caused by rival corporate sabotage.

In the quiet, darkened private room on the top floor, Dominic slowly opened his eyes.

The steady beep-beep-beep of the heart monitor greeted him.

He moved his hand slightly and felt a soft, comforting warmth holding his fingers.

He turned his head.

Maya was asleep in a chair beside his bed, her head resting on the edge of the mattress, her fingers tightly wrapped around his hand. On the small sofa across the room, little Elena was curled up under a blanket, sleeping soundly with her stuffed bear.

Dominic let out a quiet, shuddering breath. He felt tears burn the back of his eyes—something he hadn't experienced since he was a child.

Maya stirred at the movement of his hand. She sat up quickly, rubbing her tired eyes.

When she saw him looking at her, wide awake, her breath caught.

“Dominic,” she whispered, rising from her chair instantly. “You’re awake.”

“How long?” he croaked, his throat dry.

“Three days,” Maya said, pouring a glass of water from the bedside table and carefully holding the straw to his lips. “The doctors said you lost a lot of blood, but the surgery was successful. You’re going to make a full recovery.”

Dominic drank the water, his grey eyes never leaving her face. “And Julian?”

“Gone,” Maya said quietly. “His syndicate collapsed the moment the news hit the streets. Victor and your legal team have taken over all remaining operations. The city is quiet, Dominic. It’s completely safe.”

Dominic reached out with his uninjured arm, wrapping his hand around the back of her neck, gently pulling her down until her forehead rested against his.

“I thought I lost you when you walked down those stairs,” he whispered, his voice trembling with emotion. “I have faced armies, Maya. I have faced death a hundred times. But watching you walk toward Julian... I have never known such terror.”

Maya leaned into his touch, her tears falling softly onto his chest. “I couldn't let them hurt you, Dominic. I love you too much.”

The room went completely silent.

Dominic froze, his breath catching in his throat. He pulled back slightly, looking into her hazel eyes with profound disbelief and joy.

“What did you say?” he asked softly.

Maya looked at him, feeling no fear, no regret—only the absolute, unshakeable truth of her feelings.

“I love you,” she repeated, her voice strong and clear. “I didn't want to fall in love with a dangerous mob boss. I didn't plan on missing my bus that night. But you showed me what real love looks like, Dominic. You protected me, you respected me, and you gave me a family.”

Dominic pulled her down and kissed her.

It was not a gentle kiss; it was deep, passionate, and filled with months of unspoken longing, relief, and devotion. Maya kissed him back, her fingers running through his dark hair, burying herself in his strength.

When they finally broke apart, out of breath, Dominic held her face in both hands.

“I loved you the moment I saw you in that warehouse, sitting in the freeze, wrapping my daughter in your jacket,” Dominic said, his voice thick with raw emotion. “You brought light into a life that was dead, Maya Santos. And I am never letting you go.”

A small voice piped up from the sofa. “Does this mean Maya stays forever?”

They turned to see Elena standing by the bed, rubbing her eyes, a massive smile spreading across her small face.

May you like

Dominic laughed—a deep, joyful sound—and held out his arm. “Come here, sweetheart.”

Elena scrambled onto the bed, climbing between Dominic and Maya, wrapping her small arms around both of them.
