Chapter 4 - Life in the Fortress

Living inside the Valenti estate was like existing in an opulent parallel universe.

Two weeks passed. The news reported a string of high-profile corporate buyouts and unexplained warehouse fires across the city’s industrial district—the silent, bloody war being waged between Dominic and the Moretti family behind closed doors.

Inside the estate, however, a strange, quiet domesticity began to take shape.

Maya’s room was transformed. Victor had retrieved her textbooks, laptop, and clothes, allowing her to attend her university lectures online. Dominic had personally pulled strings with the university dean—a man who owed the Valenti family millions—ensuring Maya’s absence was marked as an approved independent research leave.

Every morning, Elena would wake up, slip past her guards, and run straight to Maya’s room to help her make breakfast. The little girl’s voice gradually returned, light and cheerful, filling the cold marble halls of the estate with life for the first time since Dominic’s wife had passed away four years earlier.

One afternoon, Maya sat in the glass glass conservatory overlooking the snowy gardens, helping Elena paint watercolor flowers.

Dominic walked in, wearing a dark blue suit, holding a stack of legal documents. He paused near the entrance, leaning against a marble pillar, watching them in silence.

Maya noticed him and offered a small, hesitant smile. “You’re back early today.”

“The meeting ended quickly,” Dominic said, walking over and sitting on the bench beside her. He looked at Elena’s painting, a rare, genuine smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “That looks very bright, Elena.”

“It’s Maya’s favorite color,” Elena announced proudly, pointing to a splash of bright yellow. “She says yellow means sunshine!”

Dominic looked from the paper up to Maya. The sunlight pouring through the glass ceiling caught the hazel flecks in her eyes, making her chestnut hair glow. Over the past two weeks, the pale, exhausted girl from the warehouse had transformed. Her skin was healthy, her confidence was returning, and her presence brought a quiet, soothing warmth to his once-barren home.

“She’s right,” Dominic murmured, his gaze lingering on Maya’s face longer than necessary. “It does.”

Maya felt a sudden blush creep up her neck. She cleared her throat, shifting slightly on the bench. “How were your... business meetings?”

“Complicated,” Dominic replied, his voice slipping back into its professional calm. “The Moretti family is losing support among the city council. We are closing in on their operations. But Julian Moretti—the head of the family—is becoming reckless.”

“Is he still looking for me?” Maya asked softly.

Dominic’s expression hardened. “He knows your name now. My intelligence team intercepted a wire transfer yesterday. Moretti placed a half-million-dollar bounty on your location.”

Maya’s paintbrush froze mid-air. “Half a million dollars? For a college student?”

“For the girl who saved my daughter,” Dominic corrected, reaching out and gently taking the paintbrush from her trembling fingers. He held her hand, his large thumb stroking the back of her wrist in a slow, reassuring motion. “He thinks killing you will embarrass me. He thinks it will show the other families that I cannot protect those under my roof.”

“Can you?” Maya asked, her voice a fragile whisper, her heart hammering against her ribs—partly from fear of Moretti, but mostly from the electric proximity of the man holding her hand.

Dominic brought her hand slightly closer to his chest. Maya could feel the solid, steady beat of his heart beneath his wool jacket.

“I would burn this entire city to ash before I allowed anyone to hurt you, Maya,” he said, his pale grey eyes burning with an intense, raw conviction that made her breath catch. “Do you believe me?”

Maya looked into his eyes, seeing no deceit, no hesitation—only an absolute, terrifying devotion.

“I believe you,” she whispered.

Elena suddenly giggled, splashing blue paint onto Dominic’s sleeve. “Papa’s hand is big!”

The intense tension broke instantly. Dominic let out a low laugh, shaking his head as he wiped the paint from his expensive suit with a silk handkerchief. But as he looked back at Maya, the unspoken understanding between them remained anchored in the air.

They were no longer just a mob boss and a guest.
