Chapter 5 - The Shadows Shift

By the third week, Maya’s presence in the Valenti household had become indispensable.
She wasn't just Elena’s caretaker; she had become Dominic’s quiet confidante. In the late hours of the night, when the estate was silent and the guards patrolled the grounds, Dominic would often find his way to the library, where Maya sat reading.
They would talk for hours—not about crime or violence, but about books, history, Maya’s dreams of becoming a child psychologist, and Dominic’s lost youth before his father’s death forced him to take control of the family syndicate.
“I never wanted this life,” Dominic admitted one night, swirling whiskey in a crystal glass as they sat by the fire. “I wanted to be an architect. I wanted to build things that lasted.”
“Why didn't you leave?” Maya asked softly.
“Because if I left, men like Julian Moretti would have slaughtered my family,” Dominic said quietly. “Power isn't a privilege in my world, Maya. It’s armor.”
Maya looked at him, seeing the deep, aching loneliness hidden behind his fierce reputation. She reached out, placing her soft hand over his on the arm of the chair.
“You’re building something now,” she said gently. “You’re building a safe world for Elena.”
Dominic looked down at her hand, then looked up into her eyes. The space between them seemed to shrink instantly. He leaned forward, his dark hair falling slightly over his forehead, his breath warm against her lips.
“Maya...” he whispered, his voice thick with unexpressed desire.
Maya’s heart pounded violently. She didn't pull away. She wanted him to kiss her—wanted to feel the touch of this dangerous, extraordinary man who had rewritten her entire world in a matter of weeks.
Before their lips could meet, a sharp alarm echoed through the estate.
Red emergency lights flashed along the library walls.
Dominic was on his feet in a fraction of a second, pulling a concealed firearm from his holster with practiced speed. He pushed Maya behind him, shielding her with his body.
The library doors burst open. Victor rushed in, covered in rain, holding a tactical shotgun.
“Boss! It’s a breach!” Victor yelled over the sound of blaring sirens. “A convoy of trucks just rammed the main gate! Moretti’s men are on the grounds!”
Dominic’s face turned to stone. “Get Elena to the panic room under the wine cellar now!”
“She’s already there with Dr. Mercer,” Victor reported. “But they’re pushing through the courtyard! There are too many of them!”
Dominic turned to Maya, grabbing her face gently with both hands. “Go with Victor. Stay in the panic room until I come for you.”
“Dominic, no!” Maya cried out, grabbing his lapels. “They’re coming for you! Don't go out there!”

“This is my home, Maya,” Dominic said, kissing her forehead with fierce intensity. “And no one invades my home.”
He released her, turned to Victor, and shouted, “Move!” before sprinting out into the dark hallway, drawing two handguns as the sound of heavy gunfire erupted outside.
