Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Confrontation

The corporate headquarters of Cole Health Enterprises rose thirty stories above the Indianapolis skyline—a glistening monument of blue glass and polished steel.

Claire walked through the rotating glass doors, holding Sophie tightly against her chest in a front-carrier. She felt tiny beneath the soaring, three-story atrium. Her faded winter coat and worn boots looked starkly out of place against the sea of tailored suits and designer briefcases moving briskly across the marble floor.

She walked straight to the reception desk, where a polished young woman in a black blazer was speaking into a headset.

"Can I help you?" the receptionist asked, her eyes scanning Claire’s casual attire with a subtle, professional assessment.

"I’m here to see Ethan Cole," Claire said, her voice steady despite the rapid drumming of her heart.

"Do you have an appointment? Mr. Cole’s schedule is fully booked today."

"I don't have an appointment," Claire said, pulling the handwritten note from her pocket and placing it on the marble counter. "But please tell him Claire Morgan is here. Tell him I brought the baby he fed last night."

The receptionist’s professional mask cracked for a fraction of a second. She picked up the note, read the elegant E, and immediately picked up her desk phone. She spoke in low, urgent whispers for several seconds before nodding and looking back at Claire.

"Eleventh floor, executive suite," she said, her tone suddenly respectful. "The elevator on the right will take you directly there."

The elevator ride was silent, the rapid ascent making Claire’s ears pop. When the doors slid open, she found herself in a quiet, carpeted lobby filled with modern art and deep leather sofas.

A woman in her fifties with neat gray hair and a kind expression stood waiting. "Claire? I’m Eleanor, Mr. Cole’s executive assistant. He’s currently in a board meeting, but he’s asked that you wait in his private office."

She led Claire through a set of double frosted-glass doors into a massive, corner office overlooking the city. A large mahogany desk stood in the center, flanked by floor-to-ceiling windows. On a small side table sat a silver tray with hot tea, fresh fruit, and a plate of warm pastries.

"Please, make yourself comfortable," Eleanor said, gesturing to a plush leather armchair. "He should be out in ten minutes."

Claire sat down, her muscles tense. She unbuttoned her coat, letting Sophie breathe. The baby looked around the bright, clean office with wide, curious eyes, completely unaware of the tension radiating from her mother.

Ten minutes became fifteen.

Then, the heavy oak doors of the office swung open, and Ethan Cole walked in.

He had discarded his overcoat. He wore a perfectly tailored navy suit, a crisp white shirt, and a dark blue silk tie. He looked powerful, sharp, and every bit the corporate leader his title suggested. But when his eyes fell on Claire and Sophie, his expression softened instantly.

"Claire," he said, closing the door behind him. "You shouldn't have traveled all this way."

"You had my car towed, Ethan," she said, standing up, her voice rising slightly. "You paid for my repairs, you bought me rideshare cards, you bought hundreds of dollars of formula. Why?"

Ethan walked to his desk, but he didn't sit down. He stood leaning against the mahogany edge, his gray eyes searching her face.

"Because I wanted to make sure you were safe," he said simply.

"I’m a stranger!" Claire cried. "I sent a wrong-number text. That doesn't make me your responsibility. And besides... you rejected my job application. Twice."

Ethan froze. His eyebrows drew together in a frown. "What?"

"I applied for the Clinical Care Coordinator position," Claire said, pulling the printed rejection emails from her purse and placing them on his desk. "Your company rejected me twice. Your signature is at the bottom of these letters, Ethan. So excuse me if I’m a little confused about why you’re saving my life at midnight but refusing to give me a job that would let me save myself."

Ethan picked up the papers, his eyes scanning the automated text. His jaw tightened, a hard, dangerous line appearing at the corner of his mouth.

He picked up his desk phone. "Eleanor. Get Marcus Vane from Human Resources up here. Now."
