Chapter 7 - The Trial of Truth

The Marion County Courthouse was a massive, limestone building filled with the echoes of high-stakes legal battles.
On the morning of the trial, the courtroom was packed with reporters, corporate executives, and local onlookers.
Claire sat at the plaintiff’s table, wearing a simple, professional navy dress, her hand holding Sarah’s. Behind her sat Ethan, his presence a calm, steady anchor in the middle of the storm.
On the opposite side of the room, Tyler Vance sat beside Donald Vane, his face smug, his eyes darting to the cameras in the gallery with a hungry, desperate look.
"The case is simple, Your Honor," Donald Vane argued, standing before the judge’s bench. "Claire Morgan is a woman who has consistently demonstrated financial instability, employment gaps, and an inability to provide a stable home for her child. And now, she has entered into a highly suspicious, potentially corrupt relationship with the CEO of Cole Health Enterprises—a man who has used his corporate power to buy her car repairs, her groceries, and her very job."
He pointed a finger at Claire. "We ask that the court grant primary physical custody to the father, Tyler Vance, who has a stable job and a family support system ready to care for this child."
Sarah Jenkins stood up, her face calm and unreadable.
"Your Honor," Sarah said, her voice carrying a sharp, professional clarity. "We have a single witness we would like to call to the stand. A witness whose testimony will clarify the true nature of Mr. Vance’s 'family support system' and his 'stable job.'"
The courtroom doors opened, and a tall, gray-haired man in a dark trench coat walked in.
It was Arthur Whitlock.
The former head of the Whitlock shipping syndicate, currently wearing an orange county jail jumpsuit and handcuffs, escorted by two federal marshals.
Tyler’s face drained of color. He took a step back, his hands shaking.
"Your Honor," Sarah continued. "Mr. Whitlock is currently cooperating with the federal government in their investigation of corporate fraud and labor racketeering. In his deposition, which was signed yesterday afternoon, Mr. Whitlock states that Tyler Vance was never employed as a legitimate dock worker. In fact, Mr. Vance was hired by the Whitlock syndicate specifically to act as a courier for illegal pharmaceuticals, and he was paid using funds stolen from the Cole Health Human Resources department by Marcus Vane."
She turned to face Tyler, her eyes flashing with a cold, triumphant light.
"And furthermore," Sarah said, "Mr. Whitlock has testified that Tyler Vance’s custody suit was entirely funded by the Vane family as an attempt to blackmail Ethan Cole into dropping his cooperation with the federal fraud investigation."
The courtroom erupted into a deafening roar of whispers and camera shutters.
The judge slammed his gavel, his face twisted in disgust. "Order! Order in the court!"
He looked down at Tyler Vance, his voice like iron. "Mr. Vance, is this true?"
Tyler did not answer. He looked at his lawyer, who was currently packing his briefcase and trying to distance himself from his client.
"Your Honor," Donald Vane stammered, his voice cracking. "I... I was not aware of these allegations. I would like to request a recess—"
May you like
"Request denied," the judge barked. "Mr. Vance, your petition for custody is hereby dismissed with prejudice. And I am referring this matter to the federal prosecutor’s office for immediate investigation of extortion, conspiracy, and child endangerment."
He looked at Claire, his expression softening into a respectful nod. "Ms. Morgan, you are a fit, capable, and honorable mother. This court grants you sole physical and legal custody of Sophie Morgan. This matter is closed."
