Chapter 6 - The Custody Storm

The legal battle for Sophie began with a mountain of certified letters and court dates.

By Monday, Claire had officially moved into her new townhouse. The space was beautiful, filled with natural light and the warm, clean scent of fresh paint. Sophie’s room was painted a soft, pale yellow, and the small backyard was perfect for her to crawl in the grass.

But the joy of her new home was overshadowed by the shadow of the upcoming court date.

Tyler had hired a aggressive, low-rent lawyer named Donald Vane—the brother of the disgraced HR director, Marcus Vane. It was clear that the custody suit was not about Sophie; it was a retaliatory strike designed to hurt Ethan and force Claire into a settlement that would clear the Vane family’s legal debts.

"They're alleging that you are an unfit mother, Claire," said Sarah Jenkins, the senior family attorney Ethan had assigned to her case. They sat in the conference room of the downtown law firm, surrounded by neat stacks of document files.

"Unfit?" Claire gasped, her hands clutching her coffee mug. "I’ve worked my entire life to provide for her! I’ve never missed a doctor’s appointment, I’ve never—"

"I know, Claire," Sarah said gently, placing a hand on hers. "But they are using your recent financial difficulties, your bounced checks, and your employment gaps against you. They are claiming that your relationship with Ethan Cole is a conflict of interest, and that you accepted a corporate position as a bribe to keep you silent about the HR fraud."

Claire looked at Ethan, who sat at the end of the table, his face set in a grim, silent mask.

"They're trying to drag my company into this," Ethan said, his voice quiet. "They think if they make enough noise in the press, I’ll pay them to go away."

"We can't settle, Ethan," Claire said, her voice rising with a fierce, protective fire. "If we settle, they’ll have visitation rights. Tyler is unstable. He’s a drug user, he’s dangerous. I can't let him near Sophie."

"We’re not settling," Ethan said, his gray eyes locking onto hers with a strength that made her heart swell. "We’re going to trial. And we’re going to prove exactly who Tyler Vance is."

The next morning, the first articles began to appear in the local newspapers.

"COLE HEALTH CEO ACCUSED OF USING CORPORATE POSITIONS TO INFLUENCE CUSTODY DISPUTE"

"PREGNANT MAID OR CORPORATE SPY? THE DARK SECRETS BEHIND THE CHOSEN COORDINATOR"

The press began to gather outside Claire’s townhouse, their cameras flashing every time she opened the front door. She felt like a prisoner in her own home, the terror of her past returning to haunt her in the bright, modern space she had worked so hard to build.

But Ethan did not back down. He assigned two of his personal security officers to guard her door, and he personally drove her to work every morning, his large body shielding her from the reporters who crowded the parking lot.

"Why are you doing this, Ethan?" she asked one morning as they drove through the quiet, snow-covered streets of Indianapolis. "This is destroying your company’s reputation. Your board must be furious."

"The board works for me, Claire," Ethan said, his hands steady on the steering wheel. "And my company’s reputation is built on saving lives. Not hiding from cowards. I spent ten years building Cole Health into a sanctuary. I am not going to let a group of corrupt lawyers use my name to hurt a child."

He looked at her, his expression filled with a sudden, devastating tenderness. "And besides... I care about you, Claire. More than I’ve cared about anyone in a very long time."

Claire stared at him, her heart hammering against her ribs. She reached out, her fingers gently brushing his hand on the gear shift.

"I care about you too, Ethan," she whispered.
