Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Past

On Thursday afternoon, Claire’s silver Honda Civic was returned to her parking space, running quieter and smoother than it had in years.

She spent the evening packing her small apartment. With her new employment contract signed, she had already been approved for a small, two-bedroom townhouse near the Cole Health downtown facility. It had a small, fenced backyard where Sophie could play, and it was located in a safe, tree-lined neighborhood far from Baltic Avenue.

At 7:00 p.m., a knock sounded at her door.

Claire’s heart gave a nervous flutter. She assumed it was Maya, who had promised to help her pack the kitchen boxes.

She opened the door with a smile.

The smile died instantly.

Standing in the hallway, wearing a damp leather jacket and holding a bouquet of cheap, grocery-store carnations, was Tyler Vance.

The father of her child.

The man who had walked out on her when she was six months pregnant, leaving her with $50 in her bank account and an empty apartment.

"Claire," Tyler said, his voice carrying a nervous, pleading tone. He reached out as if to hug her, but Claire immediately stepped back, her hand griping the edge of the door.

"What are you doing here, Tyler?" she asked, her voice flat and cold.

"I saw the news, Claire," Tyler said, gesturing to the television inside her apartment. "I saw the report about the Cole Health scandal. And... and I saw you on the news steps. They said you were hired as a coordinator. They said you’re making good money now."

"So you came for the money?" Claire sneered.

"No! No, that’s not it," Tyler lied, stepping closer, his eyes scanning the packed boxes in her living room. "I’ve changed, Claire. I’ve been clean for six months. I have a job at the docks now. I want to be a father to Sophie. I want to be a family again."

"You walked away when she was in the NICU, Tyler," Claire said, her voice shaking with a deep, ancient rage. "You didn't even come to the hospital. You told me to get an abortion. You have no rights to her."

"I’m her father, Claire!" Tyler’s voice rose, losing its pleading tone and turning sharp and aggressive. "My name is on the birth certificate! You can't just shut me out because you got some fancy corporate job. I have rights. And if you don't let me see my daughter, I’ll take you to court."

"Get off my property, Tyler," Claire said, her hand trembling as she began to close the door.

Tyler slammed his hand against the wood, stopping it from closing. "I’m not going anywhere, Claire. Not until I see my kid."

"She said get out."

The voice was low, calm, and carried a dangerous, heavy vibration that made Tyler freeze.

Ethan Cole stepped out of the shadow of the hallway staircase. He wore a simple gray wool coat over his shoulders, his hands in his pockets, his gray eyes locked onto Tyler with a freezing, absolute intensity.

Tyler turned, his eyes narrowing as he recognized the billionaire CEO from the news. "Who the hell are you? This is family business. Stay out of it."

Ethan took two measured steps forward, his presence completely eclipsing Tyler’s thin frame in the narrow hallway.

"I am Claire’s employer," Ethan said, each word falling like a drop of ice. "And I am the man who currently owns the building you are standing in. If you do not remove your hand from that door in three seconds, my security team downstairs will have you arrested for criminal trespass, harassment, and violation of a private dwelling. And I will personally ensure that your probation officer in Delaware County receives a copy of the security footage."

Tyler’s face drained of color. He looked at Ethan, then at Claire, realizing he was completely outmatched.

He dropped his hand from the door, his eyes flashing with a bitter, venomous light. "You think you can buy her, Cole? You think you can buy my kid? This isn't over. I’m going to the court. I’m going to get custody. And you’re going to pay for it."

He turned and bolted down the stairs, his footsteps echoing in the quiet building.

Claire leaned against the doorframe, her breath coming in shallow gasps as the terror of Tyler’s return washed over her.

Ethan stepped closer, his hand gently resting on her shoulder. "He’s gone, Claire. You’re safe."

Claire looked up at him, her eyes filled with tears. "He’s her father, Ethan. He can take her from me."

"No, he can't," Ethan said, his voice firm and absolute. "I have the best family lawyers in the state on my payroll. We’re going to fight him, Claire. And we’re going to win."
