Chapter 8 - The Sunrise of the Soul

The lobby of the courthouse was a blur of flashing lights and shouting reporters, but Claire didn't hear any of it.

She walked out of the double glass doors into the bright, crisp winter morning, her hand holding Ethan’s. For the first time in her life, the future did not look like a series of cold, terrifying calculations. It looked like the sun rising over the snow-covered streets of the city.

They drove back to her townhouse in silence, the quiet car a sanctuary after the noise of the courtroom.

When they arrived, Maya was waiting on the porch, holding Sophie in her arms. The baby was babbling, her gray eyes bright and curious as she looked at her mother.

Claire ran to them, taking Sophie into her arms and holding her close, her tears soaking into the baby’s fleece blanket.

"We won, Sophie," she whispered, her voice thick with joy. "We’re safe. We’re finally safe."

Maya hugged them both, her eyes wet with tears. "I knew you could do it, Claire. I always knew."

After Maya left, Ethan stood on the porch, his hands in his pockets, his gray eyes watching the snow melt on the garden path.

"I should go," Ethan said softly. "The board is waiting for a press release, and I need to make sure the transition at the clinic is running smoothly."

Claire walked over to him, her hand gently reaching out to touch his arm.

"Don't go," she said.

Ethan stopped, looking down at her. "Claire?"

"You’ve been standing behind me for a month, Ethan," Claire said, her voice steady and clear. "You’ve protected me, you’ve saved my daughter, and you’ve shown me what it’s like to have someone fight for me. I don't want you to be my savior anymore."

She stepped closer, her heart hammering with a wild, beautiful hope.

"I want you to be my family," she whispered.

May you like

Ethan stared at her, his gray eyes filling with a sudden, devastating tenderness. He reached out, his large hands gently cupping her face, his lips meeting hers in a deep, passionate kiss that carried the taste of salt, snow, and absolute peace.

"I’ve been waiting for you my entire life, Claire," he murmured against her lips.
