Chapter 5 - The Glass House

The struggle was brief, brutal, and ended with a heavy crash as a mahogany bookshelf toppled, pinning Isabella against the wall. Marcus, breathing heavily, stood over her, his gun leveled at her chest. He was bleeding from a graze on his shoulder, the blood soaking through his white dress shirt.

"You’re finished, Isabella," he rasped. "This ends tonight."

Before he could pull the trigger, the room’s intercom buzzed. It was Elias. "Sir! We have a breach. Multiple armed men are entering the estate. They aren't Isabella’s people—they’re from the Board. They know you’re distracted. They’re planning to take the company by force, using the security failure as justification."

Marcus looked at Isabella, then at the door. The Thorne empire was not just falling; it was being dissected. He realized, with a sudden, searing clarity, that he couldn't fight them all. If he tried to stay and defend the estate, he would lose. If he left, he would have to start from scratch.

"Elias," Marcus yelled into the intercom. "Seal the server room. Trigger the protocol. I want everything—every file, every secret, every piece of leverage I have—wiped from the servers. I’m not letting them have it. Burn it all."

"But sir, that’s twenty years of—"

"Burn it!"

Marcus took the gun and, instead of killing Isabella, he used it to smash the master control panel of the house’s security system. The lights went black. The electronic locks disengaged.

"Run," Marcus told Isabella. "Run, and never let me see you again. If I see you, I will hunt you to the ends of the earth. But tonight, you’re free to go."

Isabella, dazed and terrified, scrambled to her feet and fled into the dark.

Marcus turned and ran for the garage. He threw himself into his vintage, analog-engine sports car—one of the few things he owned that couldn't be hacked or remotely shut down. He peeled out of the driveway, the sound of sirens and approaching tactical vans filling the night air.

He was a billionaire with nothing but the clothes on his back and a car. He was heading for the hospital. He was heading for Khloe.
