Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

In the quiet that followed, Marcus sat down on the edge of the bed, feeling like the world was spinning. Khloe handed him the flash drive.
"You kept this?" he asked.
"I kept it as an insurance policy for myself," she said. "But now... I don't think I need it anymore."
She dropped the drive into the sink and turned on the faucet.
"What are you doing?" Marcus asked, rushing to save it.
"I’m letting it go," she said. "I don't want a life built on leverage. I don't want a life where I have to have an insurance policy against my husband. I want to live, Marcus. And if that means we’re poor, and we’re on the run, and we’re starting over in Scranton, then that’s what we’re going to do."
Marcus watched the drive spin down the drain. He felt a weird, exhilarating rush of freedom. He was broke, he was a fugitive, and his wife was finally his equal.
"Scranton," he mused. "Do they have good schools?"

"They have parks, and they have quiet, and they have people who don't care how much money you have."
He reached out and took her hand. It was the most valuable thing he had ever held.
