Chapter 9 - The Long Road Home

The next few months were a grueling test of their resolve. They moved under aliases, working odd jobs, living in a small, drafty apartment, and learning the rhythm of a life that wasn't dictated by schedules and shareholders.

Marcus discovered he was good at being a carpenter—he had always liked building things, he just never had the chance to touch the wood himself. Khloe returned to her passion for teaching, working at a local literacy center. They were happy, despite the fear that they were still being hunted.

But the Board, having consolidated the remnants of the Thorne empire, eventually turned on each other. Without Marcus’s guiding, ruthless hand, the company imploded under the weight of its own internal rivalries and federal investigations into their past dealings—which, ironically, were exposed when the files Marcus had deleted were recovered by a rogue analyst who leaked them to the D.C. papers.

The hunt for Marcus Thorne effectively stopped when the Board members themselves became the focus of a multi-state investigation.

They were safe.

One evening, while walking in the park, Marcus saw a familiar face across the grass. It was Isabella. She looked thin, hardened, and terrified. She had been living on the streets, haunted by the fear that Marcus would come for her.

He looked at her, then at Khloe, who was laughing as she helped their son—now a toddler—walk along the path.

He walked over to Isabella, who shrank back, expecting a strike.

"I’m not going to hurt you," Marcus said, his voice quiet. He reached into his pocket and handed her a hundred-dollar bill. "Go buy a bus ticket. Leave the city. If I see you again, I won't be the one who finds you—the authorities will. And they’re looking for everything, including your role in the estate breach."

Isabella took the money, her hands shaking, and ran. Marcus didn't watch her go. He went back to his family.
