Chapter 6 - The Midnight Run

The drive to the hospital was a blur of adrenaline and regret. Marcus had spent his entire life accumulating power, yet now, with the Board seizing his offices and his wealth being frozen, he had never felt more powerful. He was liberated from the weight of his own empire.
He arrived at the hospital entrance, sprinting through the lobby. Security had already been notified that "Mr. Thorne" was persona non grata, but Marcus bypassed them through the ambulance bay, knowing the hospital’s structural layout by heart.
He reached Khloe’s room. She was sitting up, reading a book, her face pale but her eyes clear. She looked up, startled, as he stumbled in, his shirt ruined and bloodied, his hair wild.
"Marcus?" she whispered, her hand going to her throat. "What happened?"
"Everything," he said, collapsing onto the chair next to her bed. "It’s all gone. The house, the company, the money. It’s all gone, Khloe."
She stared at him, waiting for the punchline, waiting for him to tell her it was a prank, a negotiation tactic. But when she saw the raw, terrifying honesty in his face, she saw something else: a man who had been hollowed out and was finally starting to fill up with something real.
"Why?" she asked.
"Because it was the only way to save us," he said. "I burned it all to the ground so that they couldn't use it to reach you. I wanted to be the only thing left in your life."
Khloe looked at him, and for the first time, she didn't see the billionaire who bought his way into her life. She saw a man who had sacrificed his kingdom for a queen he hadn't known how to cherish.
"You think you’re a hero because you lost everything?" she asked softly.

"I think I’m a human being for the first time," he answered.
Outside the room, they heard the sound of heavy boots. The Board’s men had found him. Marcus stood up, facing the door. He had no weapon, no wealth, and no influence. He was just a man.
