Chapter 3 - Poison in the Honey

By six in the morning, the rain had stopped, leaving the grounds of the Foretti estate wrapped in a thick, silvery mist. Elena had spent the rest of the night sitting on the floor of the boys' bedroom, her back pressed against Leo’s bed until his breathing smoothed out into deep, restful sleep.

When she descended to the main level, she found the kitchen already humming with activity. But it wasn't the boys.

A woman was sitting at the marble island, sipping espresso from a delicate porcelain cup. She was exquisitely groomed—platinum blonde hair pulled back into a slick bun, wearing a tailored ivory suit that cost more than Elena’s entire life savings. Her nails were painted a stark, blood red.

Standing near the window was a man in his late thirties with sharp, rat-like features and a thin mustache, flipping through a stack of legal documents.

"Ah," the woman said, turning around. Her blue eyes were cold and calculating as they raked over Elena’s oversized sweater and messy hair. "The new stray."

"I'm Elena Mancuso. The boys' new caretaker," Elena said, stepping into the room and immediately feeling the atmosphere shift from quiet luxury to hidden venom.

"I am Victoria Moretti," the woman said, stepping down from the stool with fluid grace. "Daniel’s sister-in-law. And this is Arthur, our family counsel."

"Ex-sister-in-law," Elena corrected gently, remembering the dossier she had read on the Foretti family before applying. Victoria was the sister of Daniel’s late wife, Julianna. Since Julianna’s suspicious death two years ago, Victoria had been fighting to gain control of the children's trust fund.

Victoria’s smile tightened, her eyes narrowing. "You have a sharp tongue for a woman whose criminal record shows an arrest for child endangerment three years ago."

Elena’s blood ran cold. The floor seemed to tilt beneath her feet. "That charge was dismissed. My ex-husband fabricated—"

"I don't care about the details, my dear," Victoria interrupted, taking a step closer. The scent of her expensive floral perfume was suffocating. "What I care about is protecting my sister’s children from low-class opportunists. A woman fighting a desperate custody battle who takes a job in a high-risk household? It smells like blackmailed leverage."

Arthur, the lawyer, stepped forward, placing a thick manila envelope on the counter.

"Miss Mancuso," Arthur said smoothly. "We are aware of your financial situation. We know about your daughter, Sofia. And we know that your court date is in fourteen days."

Elena gripped the edge of the counter, her knuckles turning white. "What do you want?"

"We want you to sign an affidavit," Victoria said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Simply state that you have observed Daniel Foretti exhibiting violent, unstable behavior around his children. State that the environment is unfit for young boys."

"You want me to lie to take his kids away from him?" Elena said, shock turning into red-hot rage.

"We want to place them in a safe, loving environment—with me," Victoria corrected smoothly. "And in exchange, Arthur here will ensure that your ex-husband’s legal claims vanish overnight. You will have full, unencumbered custody of your daughter by next week. Plus, five hundred thousand dollars in a clean offshore account."

Elena stared at the two of them. It was everything she had dreamed of for three long, agonizing years. Her daughter back in her arms. No more court battles. No more hiding. Freedom.

All it cost was destroying the man who had just given her a chance.

"And if I refuse?" Elena asked, her voice dangerously quiet.

Victoria’s smile disappeared completely, replaced by a expression of pure, unadulterated malice. "Then I will ensure that the judge in your custody hearing receives a complete dossier detailing your employment by a notorious organized crime boss. You will never see your daughter again, Elena. Not even through a glass partition."

The kitchen door swung open.

Daniel walked in, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, his tie neatly knotted. His sharp eyes immediately registered the tension in the room, dropping down to the manila envelope on the counter.

"Victoria," Daniel said, his voice flat and ominous. "I thought I had my security team ban you from the estate."

"I'm here as the aunt of those poor boys, Daniel," Victoria said, her tone instantly shifting back to smooth elegance. "Miss Mancuso was just telling us how much she enjoys the position."

Daniel looked at Elena. His dark eyes searched her face, reading the pale horror in her skin and the tight strain in her jaw.

"Is that true, Elena?" Daniel asked softly.

Elena looked at Victoria, who gave a slow, threatening nod. Then she looked at Daniel, standing tall, dangerous, yet quietly protective of the boys upstairs.

Elena took a deep breath, straightened her spine, and looked Victoria straight in the eye.

"Mrs. Moretti was just leaving," Elena said clearly. "She was trying to buy my loyalty, but unfortunately for her, I'm not for sale."
