Chapter 9 - A Seat at the Table

Six months later.

The Foretti estate was transformed.

The cold, museum-like silence that once defined the mansion was completely gone. The third floor now echoed with the sounds of five children playing. Little Sofia, a bright, bubbly seven-year-old with Elena’s dark eyes, had integrated seamlessly into the chaotic brotherhood of the quadruplets. The boys treated her like a precious princess, forming an unbreakable defensive shield around her whenever they were out in public.

Downstairs, the kitchen was alive with the smell of roasting garlic, fresh basil, and simmering tomatoes.

Elena stood at the marble island, rolling out pizza dough. Sofia sat beside her, proudly covered in flour, trying to shape her dough into a star.

The front door opened, and Daniel walked in.

He no longer looked like the exhausted, defeated widower who had stared at a glass of wine while his house burned. The coldness in his eyes had melted, replaced by a warm, quiet strength. Under his leadership, the Foretti family business had completely restructured, severing all ties with illegal operations and transitioning into legal shipping and infrastructure, crushing Victoria Moretti’s faction once and for all.

"Daddy's home!" Luca screamed, running out from the living room with a plastic light saber.

Daniel caught Luca with one arm, spinning him around before setting him down. "Where are your brothers?"

"Building a giant Lego castle in the study!" Sofia yelled back happily, waving her flour-covered hands. "Leo made a moat!"

Daniel smiled, walking into the kitchen. He walked up behind Elena, wrapping his broad arms around her waist and pulling her back against his chest. He rested his chin on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of her hair, mixed with flour and sweet vanilla.

"You're late, Mr. Foretti," Elena murmured playfully, leaning her head back against his chest.

"The board meeting ran long," Daniel whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her neck, making her shiver. "They had a lot of questions about the new foundation."

"The foundation for single mothers?" Elena turned around in his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck. "What did you tell them?"

"I told them it was named after the woman who saved my life," Daniel said softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with intense affection.

Elena felt a warm blush creep up her neck. "I just cooked pasta, Daniel."

"You saved this family, Elena," Daniel corrected gently, his hand reaching up to trace her jawline. "You walked into a war zone with wet shoes and a broken heart, and you gave my boys their father back. You gave me a reason to live instead of just survive."

From the doorway, four heads popped out from behind the frame, followed by a smaller fifth head. The kids were spying on them, giggling softly.

"Are they gonna kiss again?" Matteo whispered loudly.

"Eww, gross!" Luca hissed.

"It's not gross, it's romantic!" Sofia countered, punching Luca lightly on the arm.

Daniel laughed—a rich, deep sound that filled the entire kitchen. He didn't let go of Elena. Instead, he looked down at her, his eyes shining with a question he had been waiting months to ask.
