Chapter 8 - The Verdict

Two weeks later.
The high-ceilinged courtroom of the New York Family Court was suffocatingly quiet. Sunlight streamed through the tall arched windows, illuminating the polished mahogany pews and the solemn faces of the legal teams.
On the left side sat Richard Vance, Elena’s ex-husband, dressed in an expensive navy suit. But his face was pale, his hands shaking slightly as he sat beside his three high-priced defense attorneys.
On the right side sat Elena. She wore a simple, elegant dark green dress. Her hair was neatly pinned back. Beside her sat Marco, the Foretti family’s legendary lead attorney, looking completely relaxed as he flipped through a thick binder.
In the back row of the public gallery sat Daniel Foretti. He was dressed in a sharp black suit, his dark eyes fixed entirely on Elena. Beside him sat four young boys in matching blazer jacket suits, sitting shockingly quiet and well-behaved.
Judge Harrison, a stern woman in her sixties, adjusted her glasses and looked down from the bench.
"Mr. Vance," Judge Harrison began, her voice echoing in the silent room. "Over the past forty-eight hours, this court has received an astounding amount of certified evidence provided by the federal prosecutor’s office."
Richard Vance swallowed hard, looking down at the table.
"Not only do these documents completely exonerate Miss Elena Mancuso of all previous, fabricated charges of child endangerment," the judge continued, her tone sharp as a razor, "but they also detail a massive, multi-million dollar money laundering scheme operated by your firm, including the deliberate bribery of the previous family court referee."
Vance’s lead attorney stood up hastily. "Your Honor, my client—"
"Sit down, counselor," Judge Harrison snapped. "Federal agents are waiting outside this courtroom to take Mr. Vance into custody upon adjournment."
Elena felt tears flood her eyes. She put her hands over her mouth, her body trembling with a wave of relief so massive it felt like drowning.
Judge Harrison looked over at Elena, her expression softening into a rare, warm smile.
"Miss Mancuso," the judge said gently. "You have fought an unimaginable battle for your daughter. You have proven yourself to be a woman of extraordinary courage, integrity, and stability. The court hereby grants you immediate, sole legal and physical custody of Sofia Vance. All parental rights of Richard Vance are hereby terminated."
The gavel hit the wooden block with a loud, final BANG.
"Court is adjourned."
Elena burst into tears, sinking into her chair as Marco shook her hand with a rare smile.
From the back row, four small figures broke away from their seats and ran down the aisle.
"Elena! Elena!" Luca shouted, throwing his arms around her waist.
Matteo, Nico, and Leo joined in, wrapping their arms around her dress, cheering loudly despite the court bailiff’s mild frown.
"Did you win?!" Leo asked, looking up with bright, clear eyes. "Is Sofia coming home with us?"
"Yes, baby," Elena sobbed, kneeling down to hug all four boys tightly. "She's coming home."
Daniel walked down the aisle slowly. He stood over the group, his hands in his pockets, his dark face holding an expression of absolute, profound peace.
"You did it, Elena," Daniel said quietly.
May you like
Elena stood up, wiping her eyes, and looked at him. "We did it. Thank you, Daniel. For everything."
Daniel reached out, taking her hand in front of the entire courtroom, unbothered by the lingering eyes of the press or the lawyers. "Come on. Let's go pick up your daughter."
