Chapter 3 - The First Strike

A week passed at the Moretti estate. Under Claire's relentless, expert care, Anthony Moretti made a miraculous recovery. The fever cleared completely, his wound began to heal cleanly, and he was soon sitting up in bed, arguing with his lieutenants over shipping schedules and turf disputes.

In return, Dominic fulfilled his promise. Every morning, a top physical therapist specializing in severe burn recovery arrived at the estate. Under his guided, painful, but effective exercises, Claire felt the movement in her left arm slowly returning. The tight skin around her shoulder was breaking down, gaining flexibility day by day.

One evening, while Claire was sitting in the estate's massive library reviewing her physical therapy notes, the heavy oak doors opened. Dominic walked in, dressed in a sleek, custom black suit. In his hand, he held a sleek black tablet.

"You should see this," Dominic said, walking over to her desk and placing the tablet in front of her.

Claire looked at the screen. It was a high-resolution photograph taken outside a luxurious jewelry store in downtown Philadelphia.

Standing near the display window was Ethan. He looked happier than Claire had ever seen him, dressed in an expensive designer coat, holding a small velvet ring box. Beside him was Madison, beaming as she showed off a massive diamond engagement ring on her left hand.

A cold weight settled in Claire’s stomach. "He bought her a ring."

"With your money," Dominic added smoothly, leaning against the edge of the desk. "He officially registered his new real estate firm yesterday—Vance Capital. He used the two hundred eighty thousand dollars from the Rossis as starting capital, pretending it was an inheritance from a distant relative."

Claire stared at the picture. Four months ago, Ethan had cried at her bedside, swearing he would devote his life to making her happy. Now, he was playing the successful young entrepreneur, marrying another woman, building a life on the blood and skin she had burned away to keep him alive.

"He thinks he got away with it," Claire whispered. Her hands clenched into fists on the desk, her left arm moving higher than it had in months without a single tremor of pain. "He thinks I'm just going to sit in my tiny apartment, broke and broken, while he lives his dream."

"He thinks that because society teaches men like him that women like you will suffer in silence," Dominic said, his dark eyes burning with lethal intent. "So... tell me, Claire. Do you want to suffer in silence?"

Claire stood up. The hesitant, broken woman who had wept over cold potatoes a week ago was gone. In her place stood a woman who had survived a inferno and rebuilt herself piece by piece.

"No," Claire said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "I want him to lose everything. I want him to know what it feels like to have your life burn down around you while you stand there helpless."

Dominic smiled—a slow, terrifying, beautiful smile. "Good. Because tomorrow night, Vance Capital is hosting its launch party at the Grand Ballroom at the Bellevue. The local business community, city council members, and several Rossi front men will be in attendance."

"He’s announcing his company to the city," Claire said, catching on immediately.

"He wants to be a player," Dominic agreed. "And I think it’s time his main investor made an appearance."

Dominic stepped closer, offering her his hand. "I’ve arranged for a dress. A custom piece designed specifically for you by a house in Milan. It covers what needs to be covered, and highlights what makes you unforgettable."

Claire looked at Dominic’s hand. "Are you going with me?"

"Claire," Dominic said softly, grabbing her fingers and lifting them to his lips, kissing her knuckles gently, "I wouldn't miss your triumph for the world."

The next night, the Grand Ballroom at the Bellevue was packed with Philadelphia’s elite. Crystal chandeliers cast warm golden light over women in silk gowns and men in tailored tuxedos. Champagne flowed freely as jazz music drifted from the orchestra stage.

Ethan Vance stood near the center of the room, holding a glass of high-end scotch. He was surrounded by three potential investors, talking loudly about his vision for urban redevelopment. Madison stood by his side, showing off her ring to anyone who looked her way.

"It’s all about taking calculated risks," Ethan bragged, taking a sip of his drink. "When you know how to navigate the market, success is inevitable."

Suddenly, the music seemed to fade. A hush swept through the entrance of the ballroom, starting near the double doors and spreading like a wave across the room.

Ethan frowned, turning to see what had caught everyone's attention.

Walking through the grand archway was Dominic Moretti, the undisputed king of Philadelphia's underbelly. The room parted for him instinctively, men bowing their heads slightly in respect and fear.

But Dominic wasn't walking alone.

On his arm was Claire Donovan.

Gasps echoed through the ballroom. Claire was breathtaking. She wore a high-collared, floor-length gown of liquid emerald silk that draped over her body like a dream. The right side of the dress was cut to perfection, highlighting her toned figure, while the left side featured a long, sheer lace sleeve that covered her left arm.

Her neck scar was partially visible above the high lace collar—not hidden, but framed like a badge of honor. Her dark hair was styled in elegant waves, falling over her right shoulder, leaving her face fully visible. Her skin glowed, her eyes were bright and sharp, and her posture was regal, powerful, and utterly commanding.

Ethan’s scotch glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the marble floor.

"Claire?" he choked out, his face turning a ghostly, deathly white.
