Chapter 4 - The Public Execution

The sound of shattering glass echoed through the immediate silence surrounding Ethan’s circle. Madison gasped, clutching Ethan’s arm, her wide eyes darting between the emerald-clad woman and the terrifying man standing beside her.

Claire walked smoothly across the marble floor, her heels clicking with absolute precision. She didn't hurry. She didn't look nervous. Supported by Dominic’s formidable presence, she looked like royalty entering a room of peasants.

Ethan took an involuntary step back, his eyes glued to Claire. He couldn't reconcile the woman standing before him with the broken, weeping figure he had left in a cheap apartment eight days ago. There was no bandage on her face. Her makeup was flawless, highlighting her high cheekbones and striking blue eyes. The pink scar along her jawline looked less like a deformity and more like a striking, fiery mark of distinction.

"Ethan," Claire said softly as she stopped three feet away from him. Her voice carried clearly across the quieted ballroom. "You didn't send an invitation to your launch party. I was hurt."

Ethan struggled to find his voice. His eyes darted nervously to Dominic Moretti, whose dark gaze was locked onto Ethan with the cold detachment of a butcher examining a piece of meat.

"Claire... what are you doing here?" Ethan stuttered, sweating through his tuxedo collar. "How... how do you even know Mr. Moretti?"

"Mr. Moretti appreciates people who honor their debts," Claire said smoothly. She took a glass of champagne from a passing waiter's tray, holding it effortlessly in her right hand. "Unlike you."

Several prominent real estate developers and city officials stepped closer, curious about the sudden confrontation involving the city's most dangerous figure.

"Ethan, who is this?" one of the major investors asked, frowning. "Is this a friend of yours?"

"She's... she's my ex-girlfriend," Ethan stammered, trying to laugh it off, though the sound was high-pitched and panicked. "Claire, please, this isn't the time or place. We talked about this. I left you the apartment, I made sure things were taken care of—"

"You left me with one hundred and ninety-two thousand dollars in unpaid medical bills," Claire interrupted, her voice dropping into a clear, cutting bell tone that captivated the surrounding crowd. "You left me four hours after I cooked you lunch, while carrying a suitcase and holding your new fiancée's hand."

Gasps rippled through the gathering crowd. Madison flushed bright red, trying to shrink behind Ethan.

"That's a private matter!" Ethan hissed, his face turning red with anger and humiliation. "You have no right to come here and destroy my business event with personal drama!"

"Business event?" Dominic Moretti finally spoke. His low, velvet baritone filled the space, commanding absolute silence. "Is that what you call a party funded by stolen money, Vance?"

Ethan went pale. "What? What are you talking about, Mr. Moretti? I earned this capital! I secured an investment—"

"You secured two hundred eighty thousand dollars from the Rossi family," Dominic said flatly, pulling a crisp, legal document from his inner coat pocket and handing it to the lead investor standing nearby. "In exchange for stolen hard drives containing illegal title transfers. Drives you retrieved from the fire that nearly killed Miss Donovan—a fire set by your associates to burn down her apartment."

The ballroom went dead silent. The investor looked at the documents, his eyes widening in horror as he saw bank transfer records, police reports, and sworn affidavits linking Vance Capital directly to an active arson and racketeering investigation.

"This is absurd!" Ethan yelled, his voice cracking. "These are fabrications! She's bitter because I left her! She's lying!"

Claire stepped right up to Ethan, standing nose-to-nose with him. For the first time, Ethan tried to look away from her scars, but Claire reached out with her left arm—lifting it smoothly, perfectly, to shoulder height—and grabbed Ethan by his lapel, forcing him to look at her.

Ethan’s eyes widened in sheer shock as he felt the strength in her left hand. "Your... your arm..."

"My arm is recovering, Ethan," Claire whispered, her blue eyes blazing like liquid fire. "Just like my life. You told me the day you walked out that I saved your life, but you never asked me to destroy mine doing it. Do you remember that?"

Ethan swallowed hard, unable to speak, paralyzed by her grip and the terrifying presence of Dominic standing right behind her.

"You were right," Claire continued, her voice echoing off the high ceiling. "I shouldn't have destroyed my life for a coward. So tonight, I'm taking my life back. And I'm taking everything you built with my pain."

Claire let go of his lapel, brushing an invisible speck of dust from his suit with a look of supreme disgust.

Dominic stepped forward, placing a heavy hand on Ethan’s shoulder. The force of it made Ethan's knees buckle slightly.

"As of seven o'clock tonight, Mr. Vance," Dominic said quietly into Ethan's ear, though everyone nearby heard it, "the Moretti family has purchased ninety percent of the debt held against Vance Capital. Your bank accounts are frozen pending a federal inquiry into arson and wire fraud. The police are waiting in the lobby."

Right on cue, two uniformed Philadelphia police officers and a plainclothes detective walked through the ballroom entrance, heading straight toward Ethan.

Madison screamed, ripping her hand away from Ethan's, her diamond ring catching the light as she backed away in absolute terror. "Ethan! What did you do?!"

"Madison, wait! It's a setup! Claire, please!" Ethan begged, turning toward her as the police grabbed his arms, snapping handcuffs around his wrists. "Claire, you loved me! You saved me! You can't do this to me!"

Claire turned her back on him, stepping into the warm, protective embrace of Dominic Moretti.

"I saved a man who died in that fire, Ethan," Claire said over her shoulder, without a single shred of pity in her heart. "You're just the ghost he left behind."

The crowd parted silently as the police dragged a sobbing, screaming Ethan Vance out of the Grand Ballroom.
