Chapter 6 - The Shadow on the Docks

The war between the Moretti and Rossi families exploded into the open over the next two weeks.
With Frank Rossi growing increasingly unhinged, Dominic initiated a total economic blockade of Rossi-controlled shipping ports. Moretti enforcers intercepted illegal shipments, seized contraband, and dismantled front businesses across the tri-state area.
Claire refused to sit idly by as a passive protected asset. Utilizing her extensive trauma care training, she transformed the estate's lower wing into a state-of-the-art triage center. When Moretti men returned from skirmishes with gunshot wounds or lacerations, Claire was there—leading a small team of trusted private medical personnel, operating with terrifying efficiency and absolute calm under pressure.
The men in Dominic’s syndicate quickly stopped viewing her as the boss's guest. They began calling her La Medico—The Doctor—treating her with a fierce, religious reverence reserved for generals who save lives on the battlefield.
One rainy midnight, Claire was sitting in the medical center, organizing surgical supplies, when Marcus rushed through the double doors. His suit was soaked with blood, supporting a young guard whose leg had been shredded by shrapnel.
"Nurse Donovan!" Marcus called out, frantic. "Ambush at Dock 4! The Rossis used heavy automatic weapons! The Boss is still down there holding the line while we evacuated the wounded!"
Claire’s heart stopped. "Dominic is still at Dock 4?"
"He refused to fall back until the supply trucks cleared!" Marcus gritted out as Claire immediately began working on the guard’s leg, applying a tourniquet with practiced speed. "Frank Rossi himself showed up with a hit squad! They've pinned Dominic inside the main warehouse!"
Claire finished securing the tourniquet, handing the clamps to her assistant nurse. "Keep pressure on that artery!"
She turned, grabbing her coat and a heavy medical trauma bag.
"Claire, no!" Marcus yelled, trying to block her path. "The Boss gave explicit orders! You stay at the estate!"
Claire pulled a compact 9mm pistol from her coat pocket—a weapon Dominic had personally taught her to shoot over the past two weeks. She racked the slide with her left hand, her grip rock-solid.
"The Boss isn't my master, Marcus," Claire said, her eyes flashing like steel. "He’s my man. And I'm not letting him die on a dock."
Before Marcus could stop her, Claire bolted out the rear exit toward one of the armored SUVs parked in the courtyard. Driving through the pouring rain, her mind was crystal clear. She wasn't the scared nurse who got trapped in a burning bedroom anymore. She was a woman who commanded her own fate.
Ten minutes later, the armored SUV tore through the rusted chain-link fence of Dock 4.
The dock was a war zone. Muzzle flashes illuminated the heavy rain, and the deafening roar of automatic gunfire echoed off the metal shipping containers. Dominic’s remaining men were dug in behind a line of concrete barriers, returning fire toward a massive warehouse where Frank Rossi’s men were closing in.
Claire slammed the SUV into gear, driving the heavy vehicle straight between the line of fire, creating a massive steel shield between Dominic’s position and the shooters.
She threw open the driver's side door, grabbing her medical bag and her weapon, ducking behind the armored door.
"Dominic!" she screamed over the roar of gunfire.
Inside the concrete bunker, Dominic turned, his face spattered with rain and blood. His dark eyes widened in sheer, absolute horror as he saw her standing beside the SUV.
"Claire?!" Dominic roared, his voice cutting through the gunfire. "Are you insane?! Get back in the car!"
"You're bleeding!" Claire yelled back, spotting the crimson stain spreading across his left thigh.
A Rossi gunman appeared atop a nearby shipping container, aiming his rifle directly at Dominic’s head.
Claire didn't hesitate. She raised her pistol with both hands, took a deep breath, and fired three precise shots. The gunman dropped his rifle and tumbled off the container, crashing onto the wet asphalt below.
Dominic stared at her for a split second, shock warring with fierce pride in his chest. He used his good leg to spring forward, diving behind the armored SUV beside her.

He grabbed her by the shoulders, pulling her tight against his chest, his heart pounding like a sledgehammer. "I told you to stay at the house!" he growled into her hair, though his arms held her with desperate tightness.
"And I told you I'm staying by your side," Claire panted against his neck, pulling out a pair of trauma shears from her bag and instantly cutting open his pant leg to inspect the bullet wound. "Through fire, through bullets, through everything. Now hold still while I stop this bleeding!"
