Chapter 5 - Flames of Truth

The aftermath of Ethan’s arrest sent shockwaves through Philadelphia's real estate and criminal circles. Vance Capital collapsed overnight. The federal prosecutors, armed with the evidence Dominic had quietly funneled to them, opened a massive investigation into the Rossi family's illegal property seizures.
Three days after the gala, Claire sat in Dominic’s private office at the estate. The morning sun poured through the high arched windows, illuminating the rich mahogany books and antique leather furniture.
Claire was dressed in a comfortable cream sweater and trousers. Her physical therapist had just left, marveling at her rapid progress. Her left arm had regained eighty percent of its range of motion, a medical miracle driven by her fierce determination and the state-of-the-art care Dominic had provided.
The door opened, and Dominic walked in, holding two cups of steaming coffee. He handed one to her, sitting in the armchair opposite her desk.
"Ethan’s bail was denied this morning," Dominic reported smoothly. "The judge ruled him a flight risk due to his offshore bank accounts. He’s facing fifteen to twenty years for arson conspiracy and tax evasion."
Claire took a sip of her coffee, feeling a profound sense of quiet peace settle into her soul. "And Madison?"
"She returned the engagement ring to the police as evidence and fled to her parents' house in Jersey," Dominic said. "She won't be coming back."
Claire looked down at her coffee cup, watching her reflection in the dark liquid. "It's strange. For months, I thought my life was completely over. I thought I would always be the broken girl who got burned."
"And now?" Dominic asked softly, his dark eyes locked onto her face.
Claire looked up, meeting his gaze directly. "Now I feel like the fire just burned away everything that didn't matter, leaving behind the person I was supposed to be."
Dominic set his coffee cup down, leaning forward, resting his forearms on his knees. "The Rossis are desperate, Claire. Losing those hard drives and having Vance Capital exposed broke their control over the eastern docks. They know I was behind Ethan’s downfall."
Claire’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Are they going to retaliate?"
"They're going to try," Dominic said flatly. "Frank Rossi is a rabid dog when he's cornered. He knows he can't hit me directly at the estate, so he’s looking for vulnerabilities." He paused, his expression softening into something deeply sincere. "I offered you protection to help you heal and take your revenge. But now that Ethan is gone... you are free to leave, Claire. I can set you up in a new city, give you a new identity, and ensure you live comfortably for the rest of your life."
Claire stared at him, stunned. "You're offering to send me away?"
"I'm offering you a choice," Dominic corrected gently. "My world is dangerous. It killed my father, it nearly killed my uncle, and it brings violence to everyone who steps into my orbit. You are a healer, Claire. You belong in the light. If you stay beside me, Frank Rossi will see you as my primary target."
Claire stood up from her chair. She walked around the desk until she stood directly in front of Dominic. Without hesitating, she reached down, took his large, calloused hands in hers, and pulled him up to stand before her.
"Three years ago, you bled in an alley, and I stitched you up because I saw a man worth saving," Claire said, her voice steady, unyielding, and fierce. "Eight days ago, you walked into my ruined apartment and gave me my dignity back. You didn't hide me away. You didn't look at my scars like they were a curse. You taught me how to fight back."
She stepped closer, placing her left hand flat against his broad chest, feeling the steady, powerful thud of his heart beneath his suit.
"I spent my whole life being abandoned, Dominic," Claire whispered, her blue eyes searching his. "By my parents, by the foster system, and by Ethan. I'm not running away from the man who gave me a reason to live again. If Frank Rossi wants a war... he can have one. But I'm staying right here by your side."
Dominic looked down at her, his dark eyes swirling with a mixture of shock, reverence, and raw, unrestrained passion.
"You are a terrifying woman, Claire Donovan," Dominic murmured, his hands rising to gently frame her face, his thumbs stroking the smooth skin of her cheek and the warm line of her jaw scar.

"I learned from the best," she replied with a faint smile.
Dominic leaned down and kissed her. It was not a gentle, hesitant kiss. It was deep, possessive, and filled with months of unspoken desire, hunger, and absolute devotion. Claire wrapped her arms around his neck—her left arm pulling him close without a single second of hesitation—surrendering completely to the heat rising between them.
