Chapter 2 - The Glass House

The interior of the Slade Estate was a monument to silent wealth. Marble floors smoothed to a mirror shine reflected towering crystal chandeliers, while vaulted ceilings stretched into shadows where cold portraits of forgotten patriarchs stared down. Yet despite its grandeur, the air inside was thick with an oppressive stillness, as if no one had laughed or spoken above a whisper within these stone walls for years.

The woman standing in the grand foyer was Victoria Vance—the daughter of a prominent political boss whose family had forged a blood-and-money alliance with the Slade Syndicate twenty years ago. She was Darius’s betrothed by contract, a woman who viewed the estate not as a home, but as a throne she was destined to inherit.

Victoria glided down the marble staircase, the quiet tap of her heels sounding like a clock ticking down to a confrontation. She paused two steps above us, her pale eyes sweeping over my worn denim jacket, the fraying handles of my plastic bags, and four-year-old Ruby clinging tightly to my hip.

"Management?" Victoria repeated, her tone smooth as silk, yet carrying an edge sharp enough to draw blood. "Darius, darling... she looks like she barely managed to survive the night. Is this a residence or a sanctuary for River North strays?"

I felt the blood rush to my cheeks, a hot sting of shame rising in my throat. But before I could speak, Darius took a single step forward, his towering form cutting off Victoria’s line of sight to my children.

"Elena’s employment is my business, Victoria," Darius said, his voice dropping into a low, rumbling register that made the crystal drops on the chandeliers tremble. "You do not oversee household operations, nor do you speak to my staff in that manner."

Victoria’s red lips curled into a thin, artificial smile. "Of course. My apologies. I simply worry about security. After all, with the syndicate’s current... delicate negotiations, allowing an unverified woman and two unknown children into the primary residence seems remarkably reckless."

"She is verified," Darius replied flatly. "Her quarters are ready on the east wing. Show her to them."

He turned his gaze toward me, his dark, stone-cold eyes softening just enough for me to notice. "You’ll find everything you need in the east suite, Elena. Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper, will assist you with the children's routine. Rest today. Your work begins tomorrow."

"Thank you, Mr. Slade," I said softly, holding my chin high despite the weight of my exhaustion.

I led Ruby and carried baby Mia past Victoria, who stood motionless on the stairs. As I brushed past her, she leaned in slightly, her voice dropping to a sharp whisper meant only for my ears: "Enjoy the silk sheets while you can, little girl. Trash always finds its way back to the gutter."

I didn't give her the satisfaction of a response. I kept walking.

The east wing suite was larger than my entire south-side apartment. It featured two interconnected bedrooms, a private bathroom with a deep porcelain tub, and a sitting area with plush velvet armchairs facing a grand stone fireplace. Laid out on the mahogany dining table was a spread of warm roast chicken, mashed potatoes, fresh rolls, and two tall glasses of milk.

Ruby gasped, letting go of my hand and running toward the table. "Mommy! Look! Is this all for us?"

"Yes, sweetheart," I whispered, setting Mia down in a carved wooden crib lined with soft organic cotton.

Ruby sat in the chair, her little legs swinging back and forth as she devoured a warm roll. "Mommy... the big man in the suit... is he going to stay here too?"

"He lives here, Ruby," I said, pulling a chair beside her and wiping a crumb from her cheek. "We work for him now. We're going to clean this house and keep it neat, and in return, he gives us food and a safe place to sleep."

Ruby stopped chewing, looking at me with eyes far too mature for a four-year-old. "He didn't let the bad man hurt you, Mommy. And he didn't let the cold lady scare us either."

I held my daughter close, pressing a kiss into her soft hair. Outside the window, a heavy rain began to fall against the tall glass panes, blurring the vast, dark grounds of the estate. I had secured food and shelter for my daughters, but as I looked out into the gathering darkness, I knew the shadows surrounding Darius Slade held secrets that could destroy us all.
